February 2025 Spin Challenge

Day 16 - Do A Grouch A Favor Day - Play something you enjoy when you're grumpy or down in the dumps.

The Tragically Hip "Up To Here" (1989 MCA; 2016 reissue)
This, or any Hip, is both sing-along for me and has that oomph and energy to pick me up.

Perfect timing, since this just came in yesterday and I'm finishing my second spin. Phish in general does nothing for me. But this album is fantastic.

Day 17 - National Random Acts Of Kindness Day - Play something by an artist that has proven they think of others.

George Michael "Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1" (1990 Epic; 2017 reissue)
Reknowed to be extremely generous:

Magnolia Electric Co. - Trials & Errors

I am rarely down in the dumps, I’ve been in loving committed relationship for 18 years and that’s about all I need to be content. I was a sad kid but I think spending a good portion of my teens and 20s high on psychedelics realigned my brain in a way that I genuinely never get depressed anymore. I still enjoy “sad bastard” music and I would like to imagine if I were ever in a depressed funk that the likes of Molina, Oldham, Callahan and Marshall would be my soundtrack.

Dave Matthews Band - Under The Table And Dreaming

Dave is on the Farm Aid board amongst Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp and Margot Price.

Dave and his crew also helped save Michael Franti & Spearhead's Power To The Peaceful festival back in '04!

The PTTP generator blew halfway through the festival and the DMB crew, who were setting up for their show the next day elsewhere in Golden Gate Park, hauled their generator over so Gift of Gab, String Cheese Incident, and Spearhead could play their sets to finish out the festival.

Quakers are good people.

When I was a kid I hated disco. Or thought I did. I wrote off plenty of good music because I had long hair and listened to Led Zeppelin.
I was wrrr wrrrr wrong.

In my defense, there was a huge anti-disco movement at the time. I mean, we all had DREAD Cards from the local rock station.

Nick Cave - Idiot Prayer

I had played some Magnolia Electric Co and feel much the same as TLK with those sad bastard bands, but since I was scooped I'll play another that fits that mold.

I wasn’t a Jazz guy, I didn’t have the patience for instrumental jams; until my Mid-30s. I enjoy it quite a bit now. Though I did go a bit overboard when I first started to get into the genre. Nowadays I am far more selective when I choose to add a jazz album to my collection.

Grateful Dead - Grateful Dead (aka “Skull and Roses”)

It took me quite a while to get into the Dead. On paper, I should love them. This genre is right up my alley. But for some reason, even still to this day, there’s something that just doesn’t fully click for me and their music. It wasn’t until I started diving into their live catalog that I started to “get it” more.

Bloc Party - Silent Alarm

As someone who was in high school 20 years ago, when Silent Alarm debuted, I am a massive Bloc Party apologist. Silent Alarm is perfect. Weekend is great. I even like Flux and will defend Four. I even have positive things to say about Kele's solo debut The Boxer. But Bloc Party is just not the same without the OG rhythm section.
