February 2025 Spin Challenge

Day 7 - National Wear Red Day - Play a record with a red cover, or has red in the title.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe - Live in 1960

Despite being born in Arkansas, Sister Rosetta settled here in Philadelphia later in life. But she still made her living touring in Europe, which is where this album was recorded, as she was a little too proper for the rock n' roll crowd and too secular for the gospel crowd. She died in 1973, but didn't receive a proper gravestone until 2009 when a local writer put on a benefit concert after seeing an interview with her biographer.

Some more reading on how her legacy temporarily vanished

In 2011, she received her own historical marker where her home was in Philadelphia. I would regularly walk there during COVID.

Day 6 - National Frozen Yogurt Day - Play something that's a quality substitute for the real thing.

Henryk Górecki Performed By Beth Gibbons And The Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra Conducted By Krzysztof Penderecki – Symphony No. 3 "Symphony Of Sorrowful Songs" Op. 36

This trio of orchestral movements chronicling a mother's loss of her son is deeply moving. Maybe the darkest opening string bows I've come across. Beth Gibbons was the right vocal choice here, and might even top Stefania Woytowicz's performance from the original 1976 symphonic recording.

The Zenmenn - Enter The Zenmenn

Played this last week when running through my few dozen unplayed records, and I have a good excuse to throw it on again! A lovely excursion of space age exotica with a comfy Balearic focus. Music From Memory bringing the goods always.

I just spun this the other day, unrelated to the challenge. It's so powerful, when one chooses to listen to this, it's a choice.

Day 7 - National Wear Red Day

Please don't confuse my laziness for apathy. I love this album, and someone here turned me on to it...I just don't remember. AOTM maybe? I didn't do a search.

Turned you on you said.
I love both volumes of this album but prefer this one. Mark was a member of the forum for some time but now left (at least I can't mention him).

Looked for an album with a red cover that I hadn't listened to in a while - searching for my post over on the Hoffman forum, it has almost been 7 years since I've spun this.

Day 8: Kite Flying Day
Play something that reminds you of flight/the skies

Donald Byrd - Places And Spaces

@ranbalam had the right idea, Byrd seems to enjoy the idea of flight, this album artwork is tiled with photos of planes in flight, fluffy clouds and blue skies all of which match the boisterous playful nature of the music contained on this record.

Scooped! This was the first record I thought of when I read the prompt.
