Day 8 - Kite Flying Day - Play something that reminds you of flight/the skies.
Teresa Bright - Blue Skies
She was a Honolulu-born ukulele and jazz vocalist whose music was popular in both Hawaii and Japan back in the 80s. This release is an archival material of vocal jazz recorded in '05. She passed away early September last year, just before I was in Hawaii for vacation.
I found this at Aloha Got Soul in Honolulu on a part of the co-owner's recommendation for a cool $20. First time playing this since acquiring. So, not only does this remind me of picturesque Hawaiian skies like the beautiful oil-painted cover would show, but also provides me the comfort of having extended family from my father's side over on the islands; only a 5hr flight away.
Rest in peace, Teresa Bright.
I used to have a record with all the BBC sports themes on it, which was pure nostalgia (my absolute favourite - Soul Limbo by Booker T for the cricket). But I sold it in one of my regular purges so this will have to do. F1 for me will always be The Chain...
I have a story about the Aquarium Rescue Unit. Their bass player Oteil tried to steal my girlfriend when my band opened for them at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor. She was boarding their tour bus as I was loading our band van, but I managed to talk her out of leaving with them. Dude is amazingly talented, I can't say I blamed her for considering it.
Day 8 - Kite Flying Day - Play something that reminds you of flight/the skies.
Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks "Sparkle Hard"
Features the song Kite and if I know anything about Stephen Malkmus it's that he's very literal in his lyrics so the song is a six minute tribute to kites and the flying if said kites! I also haven't listened to this record in ages and am really enjoying it!
Day 9 - Super Bowl Sunday - Play something that reminds you of a sport, or that mentions a sport
Beirut "The Flying Cup Club"
What a better sport to grab your attention than hot air ballooning! I mean is it a sport? If you're able to win a flying cup I'm going to say yes!
