February 2025 Spin Challenge

Day 21 - No One Eats Alone Day - Have a fellow member pick a record for you to play, or play something you know another member loves.

Be my friendo and pick me an album?

How about Sonic Youth - Washing Machine?

Day 22 - National California Day - Play something that makes you think of Denmark's future acquisition. 😁

I for one welcome my future Danish overlords. To them I say "velkomst!". I look forward to some sort of cali/mex/danish fusion. Maybe some Flæskesteg tacos or a Poke Bowl with Pickled Herring.

Growing up here and spending most of my life in California, most of my albums have some sort of mental connection. That being said, I'm going to go with this one, and Free Fallin in particular, because I grew up near the San Fernando Valley where Reseda is (and where I used to get records at Moby Disc), my High School was on Mulholland Drive, and we'd cruise Ventura Boulevard. So that song is quintessentially So Cal to me.

Day 22 - National California Day - Play something that makes you think of Denmark's future acquisition. 😁

Finally caught up after a couple days out of town, and working a bit!

Sloan - Alive & Alright (with the song Losing California)

Still waiting for a repress or box set for Between The Bridges with this song on it. A bit out of what I'm willing to pay for a copy on cogs.

Day 17 - National Random Acts Of Kindness Day - Play something by an artist that has proven they think of others.

Ronnie James Dio received the Philanthropist Award from the Children of the Night charity in 1988. Children of the Night is a privately funded non-profit organization established in 1979 with the specific purpose to provide intervention in the lives of children who are sexually exploited and vulnerable to or involved in prostitution and pornography.

Day 23 - National Banana Bread Day - Play something that you like to play while cooking, or something that mentions food

Mongo Santamaria "Sofrito"
This is definitely something I'd play while cooking, probably trying to make Sofrito which looks delicious and would probably be best made by a professional!

Day 18 - National Drink Wine Day - Grab a drink and play a record that mentions an adult beverage (or favorite N/A drink).

I haven't had an adult beverage in quite a while...I may have one for this spin. I don't think I have any beer, though.

And since we are coming up on the 4th anniversary of his death, I figured I'd spin something from William Rieflin.

Day 19 - Tug Of War Day - Play something by someone you or others have a less than favorable opinion of at one point in time.

During the early era of my music listening, I had a less than favorable opinion on female lead singers. I think it was mostly because they weren't in genres I listened to, but it would also bleed a bit into genres I did listen to. I've come around on this opinion a lot over the last 2 and a half decades, but there are still a couple that I don't enjoy - Janis being one.

My wife had an instant pot...but she gave up using it when it spewed soup all over the kitchen. She may have a PhD, but cooking or following directions of appliances isn't her strong suit.

I tend on using my air fryer mostly these days...but with warm weather coming my sous vide/smoker combo will be getting more work.

But i have a pork loin chop going in the air fryer in an hour or so.

I don't have a sous vide cooker, so I'm curious - do you use the sous vide to get it most of the way, then finish it in the smoker?

Actually the opposite. I smoke when the meat is still frozen - after I season it up.

Smoke it for an hour or 2 - then into the sous vide for a few more hours.* I get the smoke flavor, but the exact temperature that you can get with sous vide. Then you sear right before serving.

This way is also pretty easy and I don't spend a lot of time "cooking".

*with the sous vide, you can't really overcook, so you pull it out about 15 minutes before you eat. Let it sit for 5 minutes then sear and serve.

Day 23 - National Banana Bread Day - Play something that you like to play while cooking, or something that mentions food.

William Tyler - Goes West

I love something that makes me not have to focus on but reinhard me occasionally while cooking. Dessert groves does that. William Tyler radio is perfect.

Day 20 - Love Your Pet Day - Play something reminding you of a pet you've had.

When my wife and I used to live in Illinois we had a cemetery about a half mile down the road, so we would load up the dog and go there to walk. She'd run off into the woods and about 10-15 minutes later I'd start driving home. She would then chase/run along side my car and beat me to the back door of the house. She got pretty good exercise this way. And anytime I think of a cemetery, I think of this.

OH...and we decided to get married their too...but the theme was about a pet...so.
