Fresh Grabs

Nice haul, which pressing is that Miles Davis? Is this your way of telling us you are going to be spending some time over on the jazz thread ;)

It’s a sony legacy. There seemed to be loads of old stuff repressed on white vinyl last week, the Lou Reed was the same.

Haha! Not so much sorry! I’m still not a jazz fan but I’m capable of being able to apprieciate greatness even if it isn’t in a genre I normally like and so I’m happy to have a few Miles or Coltrane pressings in my wider collection!

I also mischievously like the contrariness of, in such a generally very self important genre, owning 4 Miles records on colour vinyl 😂

I'd be surprised if many hauls from the post office top this in 2021. Perhaps the best single disc from my favourite band, the N&G ROTM that I feel like I ordered a year ago (probably not that far off). And two fab books on great bands. Plus, if only everybody shipped their records like Superfly - with the LP outside the cover...

I have this book by Burgess - Tim Book Two: Vinyl Adventures from Istanbul

Its a great concept even if the book format is all over the place. He essentially asks friends for a single album recommendation then looks for a vinyl copy of it on his travels, restricting himself to indie stores. He also mentions how he signs copies of his latest album then goes into Charity shops and 'hides' them for people to find, which is cool.

My leading white whale popped up on Discogs and I just...went for it. No comment on the amount of money that exchanged hands and how feverishly I watched the tracking given USPS but it arrived. And now my Alison Sudol / A Fine Frenzy vinyl discography is complete. Given under 65 of either of the AFF are on Discogs I feel fortunate to assemble it as quickly as it came about.

(if anyone says Pines was pressed I'm just quitting)

A Fine Frenzy - Bomb in a Birdcage (with cameos from the other two releases)

Sounds like it was someones last day at the warehouse and they had a checklist
  • Crap in the toilet cistern - check
  • Piss in the coffee pot - check
  • Send a little desk calendar instead of a 4lp Roots box set - check

I've received these 2 Prince releases today. "Rave un2 the joy fantastic" bought from JPC, and the "Emancipation" 6 LP set bought from HHV. I really like the Emancipation album a lot and wanted to buy it on vinyl since it got released. It has many gems, in my opinion. Hope it sounds as good as the other Prince releases.

Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou - Volume 4
Vis-à-Vis - Odo Guahorow

My local is still allowing pick ups even in lockdown so I collected these absolute beasts. The Poly-Rythmo is my favourite album of theirs (the recent Superfly release is a compilation; this a proper record) by their awe-inspiring drummer Leopold Yehouessi. There are two Vis a Vis re-releases (the other one, the white one, is the essential one, I think, but I already have it - video is from that release) from a Canadian label that is new to me (We Are Busy Bodies) so interested to check them out. They're one of the great highlife bands of Ghana. We'll worth checking out both.
