September Acquisitions

Björk - Fossora
Kenji Kawai - Ghost in the Shell (Original Soundtrack)
Manuel Göttsching - E2-E4
Grouper - Shade

Upon listening to the newest Björk record from two days ago, it was instant enjoyment. Went to 2nd Avenue Records to snatch one before I suspect they go quickly.
A wantlist item for about a year or so, the original Ghost in the Shell soundtrack was only $20 at MP.
Was turned onto E2-E4 recently also thanks to MP. Scratches more of an avantgarde electronic itch I've recently picked up.
Liz's album from last year was much better than I gave it credit for. $15 at Mississippi Records. I'll try to get this signed next time I see her.

Pat Metheny Group - Travels
Oneohtrix Point Never - Replica
Sonic Spinball (Original Soundtrack)
Streets of Rage (Original Soundtrack)

20221001_171916.jpg

Thank you again to @Dtknuckles for the Pat Metheny PIF. Haven't played it yet, but I'll likely get around to it by mid-November.
Tried out (what is considered to be) OPN's classic ambient piece again, and I clicked with it at last. Picked up at MP.
Both of the videogame OSTs were acquired from Final Form, which I haven't visited since April. I felt compelled to go as a window of the shop's was shattered from an attempted break-in three days ago. Nothing stolen, the owner said on IG, but it makes me angry. I hope that my newer schedule will allow me to visit more frequently to make supportive purchases, even though the shop is very out of the way for my usual excursions in Portland.

Thank you to @swamp jazz box set for the neon music, Lisa, and ghost pins! I just checked his Etsy page and he has his stock slashed down to excellent prices.
The two on the bottom row were acquired from MP, all others acquired from various outlets. Sales from the pronoun pins go to support the Trevor Project.

Nat Birchall - Afro Trane (Ancient Archive of Sound, 2022 First Limited Pressing)
Nat Birchall Unity Ensemble - Spiritual Progressions (Ancient Archive of Sound, 2022 First Pressing)
Cherry Tree - Vol. 4 Bundle

Continuing my intrigue for all things Nat Birchall (who gave one of the best live performances I have seen in recent years from a contemporary musician) I ordered his latest records. Unfortunately, the Afro Trane has a pretty gnarley seam split at the top. An unexpected arrival was the Cherry Tree Vol. 4 bundle, minus the record which hasn't been released yet. I have to admit that I thought this one to be the weakest so far. It's nice to receive them but they do just feel like cheap merch, especially compared with the extras from previous years.

The Ric Colbeck Quartet - The Sun Is Coming Up (Fontana, 1970 First Pressing)
Harold McNair - The Fence (B & C Records, 1970 First Pressing)
Buck Clayton - Just A Groove (Vanguard, 1973 First Pressing)
John Cameron Quartet - Off Centre (Deram, 1969 First Pressing)

Another pile of more obscure British jazz records. The Ric Colbeck has been on my radar for a while but rarely pops up for an affordable price, and this copy is super clean! The Harold McNair is a fantastic album, the gatefold here has the front pouch but the balloon that was originally in it is missing (I have only ever seen 1 copy with the balloon) but the mark to the top corner is unfortunate. The John Cameron is an album that I was not familiar with but the seller of the Colbeck and McNair mentioned it and offered it up at a super low price because the sleeve is damaged. Then for good measure, he threw in a Buck Clayton album as well!!! Top guy!

Mike Westbrook Orchestra - Metropolis (RCA/Neon, 1971 First Pressing)
Mark Murphy - Mark Time! (Fontana, 1964 First Signed Pressing)
Cleo Laine and John Williams - Best Friends (RCA Victor, 1976 First Pressing)

Working close to the record shops has its advantages. I popped in to find a handful of great British jazz records (including Norma Winstone's 'Edge Of Time') with Mike Westbrook's 'Metropolis' instantly catching my eye as its been on my wantlist for ages. It was priced very well (below anything I have found online) so I pulled the trigger. The Mark Murphy was a super cheap find which is signed. My fiancée's dad stumbled on a load of records and asked if there were any I would want, with this Cleo Laine and John Williams being the one that I went for.

This is a grail of mine, so was stoked to find it on the Cogs, graded VG/VG+ with the comment “Very clean copy, sleeve in great shape, a couple surface scratches on B side of the record”.

Well there are a lot more than a couple surface scratches on both sides. Cleaned it with my Spin Clean, playing it now, there’s a skip on Side A, along with lots of background ticks that occasionally break through the music. Haven’t played side B yet.

Does VG sound like a proper grading?

In my interpretation of Goldmine grading, a skip drops the grade to Fair, based on the wording.

"The item is cracked, badly warped, and won't play through without skipping or repeating."

I assume that your question is rhetorical, but no, VG is not the proper grade. A VG record should play well with the occasional noise here and there. Any record that contains a skip does not even qualify as G (“A record in Good or Good Plus condition can be played through without skipping”). It’s either Poor or Fair.

Kind of a weird assortment of albums

Scorpions - Lovedrive
ZZ Top - Eliminator
José González – Vestiges & Claws
Bill Withers - +'Justments

ZZ Top and Scorpions both look unplayed even though the covers are VG or so. I'll take it!

Returned from a weekend in Montreal.
Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden (with dvd-a) and Mogwai - Les Revenants are both from Aux 33 Tours, a great shop on Mont-Royale. Would have spent more time in there but had a bit of a pandemic panic attack as it was really busy.

The Vieux Farka Touré Et Khruangbin - Ali (jade green) and Comet is Coming - Hyper-Dimensional Expansion Beam are both from Atom Hearth Musique Alternative on Sherbrooke. @Turbo not sure if you know about this shop but worth a visit next time you are in Montreal. Great little shop, highly curated is the best I can describe it.

Atom Heart? Yeah that was one of my haunts when I lived in Montreal. Very small but super cool. It's great that's it's still around! It was my wife's favorite record store because they had this plush lazy boy she could lounge in while I was digging. Is it still there? Those guys were instrumental in me getting into early 2000's indie like DFA, White Stripes, etc. Got all my DFA and LCD Soundsystem singles there back in the day. They were big in all of the alternative ambient-electronic stuff too.

Did you find Cheap Thrills nearer McGill or Beatnik on St Laurent?

Cheap Thrills was on my list but we never made it there. Next time.

It's upstairs above a restaurant on a side street in an old building and those stairs you go up are way off kilter. A bit disconcerting but at the same time it fits the psychedelic name they chose for themselves. It's been that way for as long as I remember so almost 30 years. Anyway, neat place. A ton of new vinyl in many genres and a fair bit of used as well. Used CDs and books too.

Good to know. We are hoping to be back on the May long weekend. My wife is at a conference and I will have a whole day free to go digging again.
