Still ended up buying a lot. October will be my last month purchasing records for the year. Thankfully, a pair of MFM releases are scheduled to be available in a few Portland independent stores before the end of the month.
September Acquisitions
Current year releases
Magdalena Bay -
Imaginal Disk (signed)
Floating Points -
Cascade
Saw Magdalena Bay at the beginning of September for the second time. Great show, and bought the album in the merch line after arriving early (pricy, but worth it considering Discogs prices for the tour exclusive variant). Waited outside the venue for just over an hour along with a few other diehard fans for Matt and Mica to leave the venue, and sure enough they were kind enough to stop by and sign merch and take a few photos with fans. Love them love them love them
Got the new Floating Points at Super-Electric Records for cheaper than other stores were stocking. Was listening to the record on the drive into Portland, and thought to purchase it if I crossed paths with a copy. Excellent to have this as a DJ record!
Ambient/Moon Glyph
Tim Hecker -
Ravedeath, 1972
Iceblink -
Carpet Cocoon
Lia Kohl -
Normal Sounds
Oval Angle -
Figures of Speech
Tim Hecker's classic (one of many!) being repressed was great to see. $27 at Mississippi Records.
All of the other three are from Portland label Moon Glyph, each $20. Iceblink's record is a blend of ambient/new age and folk, Lia Kohl's is an electroacoustic/ambient record focusing on the everyday sounds of normal life (rush hour traffic, airplane takeoff, droning floodlight noises, etc.) and applying a minimal backdrop, and Oval Angle's is a progressive electronic record with playful synths and minimalism repetition.
Music From Memory
Napoleon Cherry -
Walk Alone
Uneven Paths: Deviant Pop From Europe 1980-1991
Priscilla Ermel -
Origens Da Luz
Total Blue -
Total Blue
Found both Napoleon Cherry and European pop comps at Clinton Street Records. Napoleon Cherry is a synth funk artist in vein with Dam-Funk with some incorporations of soul (track "When You Had the Chance" is a smooth cut). The
Deviant Pop comp is fun; lots of obscure sophisti-pop, new wave, boogie across the tracklist.
Priscilla Ermel, now out of print for a few years, was found used at Music History for $25. The jacket is in rough shape, with three dinged corners (one creased), and both top seams of the gatefold split. Thankfully the records look to be in great shape. Beautiful music from Brazil, of which a track each from this compilation can be found on both volumes of the excellent
Outro Tempo compilations.
Absolutely pleased to have the debut Total Blue record. One of my top10 on the label...tribal ambient with progressive electronic sections that give me cause to think that Manuel Göttsching had influence on its creation. One of my favorites of the year.
Aloha Got Soul finds
Ros Bandt and LIME -
Soft and Fragile
Teresa Bright -
Blue Skies
Mackey Feary Band -
Mackey Feary Band
Max High -
Recordings 3 (signed)
Nick Kurosawa -
Home
The first record here is the only one of the five pictured not on the Aloha Got Sounds label from when I visited the brick and mortar store in Honolulu last month on vacation. This record from Ros Bandt is an avantgarde/minimalism record that I first got wind of from the Outer Sounds record subscription. Enjoyed it from a stream a couple years ago and had it in my wantlist...nice to see it was $10 in the clearance section.
Teresa Bright was half of Steve & Teresa, the duo making that gorgeous
Catching a Wave record. I got that record as a PIF a few years ago and still love it, especially my father loving it. I was guided to this Teresa record as I mentioned to the store employee I was seeking recommendations on the label with having already owned S&T. This one has a more vocal jazz approach that fits the laid-back, no stress atmosphere of vacationing in Hawaii perfectly. I learned from the employee that she sadly passed away about two weeks before.
My dad likes Kalapana (he went to the same high school as lead singer Mackey Feary), and I thought to get this solo adventure of this after hearing his voice. Truly, his vocal inflection had so many simiiarities to Tatsuro Yamashita (山下達郎), a city pop hero. This one absolutely smokes, too.
This record from Max High is actually an employee who works in the store. I also mentioned to the employee that things I look for in record stores are experimental/ambient LPs, and this mixtape was one I was handed. Gave it a listen on the turntable, and found myself enjoying it for the few minutes I played it. He was actually available in the back of the store and he offered to sign it on the back; happy for him to do so. The hype sticker mentions that it is for fans of Gigi Masin, and Cluster; fairly accurate. He makes these mixtapes in his freetime, with the first one during the early stages of the pandemic.
Lastly, the Nick Kurosawa record was provided for free after I brought the first four for purchase to the counter. Six songs on an EP cut at 45RPM, with a few covers (Kalapana, Sam Cooke, Bobby Caldwell). Very deep, soulful voice. Altogether, it came to about $83 with tax for the records above, not bad at all.
Miscellaneous
Double Dragon IV Official Soundtrack
Out Run Original Soundtrack
A.A. Williams -
As the Moon Rests (signed)
billy woods and Kenny Segal -
Hiding Places
Toshiko Yonekawa (米川敏子) -
Tapestry Koto & The Occident Country
Both the Double Dragon and Out Run OSTs were purchased at Final Form. Double Dragon was only $5 on clearance, and Out Run was much more manageable after trading in a pair of OSTs from my collection that were collecting dust. The packaging for the latter was well thought out; two lithographs are included to change the back drop behind the die-cut portion of the sleeve if so desired.
A.A. Williams was stellar this past Saturday. Still need to upload concert details. I bought this copy of
As the Moon Rests and had her sign it after, as well as the copy of
Forever Blue that I brought from home.
billy woods and Kenny Segal were great as well. Fourth time overall seeing woods perform. Bought a copy of
Hiding Places from the merch table, and had woods and Segal sign that and three other records I brought from home.
Added another beautiful record of traditional koto music set to a modern instrumental backdrop, with the help of trading in some unplayed records. One more of these left to complete the trilogy!
