Fresh Grabs

The Roots are my favourite hip hop act. But for whatever reason I only have on vinyl their albums I consider the very best. Making steps now to remedy that...

The Roots are my favourite hip-hop group as well, amazing live!

One more to the Japanese Jazz Project Re:Vinyl serie: Ryo Fukui - Scenery.

I already had the We Release Jazz reissue (great reissue by the way: half speed remastered, pressed at Optimal on 180g vinyl with a nice tip-on sleeve and obi) but when I saw the last Superfly Records newsletter with this other reissue for sale, I couldn't pass (thanks @Selaws too). Akira Ishikawa - Back to Rhythm is on the way (coming from Belgium) and should arrive next week so I will only be missing two LP from the serie (Akira Ishikawa & Count Buffalos ‎– Electrum and Ryo Fukui Mellow Dream) and one 7'' (Akira Ishikawa ‎– Let's Start/Bongo Rock).

So if you see one of those, hit me up :)

I'm assuming you already have Mellow Dream from We Release Jazz?

Btw I have the Mr Bongo reissue of Back to Rhythm, which is incredible. So that might be a good alternative.

Super exciting haul.

The Young Lions (Vee Jay, 1960 Mono First Pressing)
Been after this since I first heard it. Amazing line up of ‘Young’ musicians including Lee Morgan (who kind of gets slated in the liner notes as being a Clifford Brown knock off).

Ornette Coleman - A Shape Of Jazz To Come (Atlantic, 1959 Stereo First Pressing)
A turning point for free jazz and part of the killer albums from ‘59. Been looking for a decent copy of this for a while too so it’s a great day!

Most recent grabs...

My Morning Jacket - Tennessee Fire
Gomez - Liquid Skin

Two quality reissues that I had been looking forward to.

Dr. Lonnie Smith - Funk Reaction
Father John Misty - Fear Fun
Hüsker Dü - Metal Circus

I love organ based jazz funk and as such I also love me some Lonnie Smith. I was unfamiliar with this album but it’s got Lonnie looking smooth AF on the cover and “Funk” in the title so I couldn’t pass it up. My assumption was on point. This has some great tunes.

The FJM is the Newbury Comics variant that I found for a reasonable price

The Hüsker Dü album is a 1991 10” repress of one of the band’s early EP. I am not familiar with this particular release but took a flyer cuz Hüsker Dü is rad.

Wand - Laughing Matter
Stereolab - Aluminum Tunes

Another couple of albums from my LRS. I had a full punch card so I was able to pick these up for 20% off which made for a pretty nice deal.

Props to @Woob_woob for repping hard for Wand. I finally gave em a listen and this was just the type of record I was looking for. It’s a brilliant arty guitar rock album. It’s been on heavy rotation digitally so I was happy do grab a copy to spin on my deck.

The Stereolab is the clear version. Another one I’ve wanted since it was repress but hadn’t picked up...until today!

I have Mellow Dream indeed. Another beautiful work from the guys at WRJ.

I'll tell you how it sounds but all the records from the serie were great. I have so many records to play, I haven't spun any in the last 15 days :(

Dodax.nl came through! Delighted to finally have this in my collection, one of my top 3 blue note albums. Absolutely love it!

Interesting that superfly has this as well as I remember that WRJ had exclusively secured the rights for a European release. Perhaps now it's been more than a year so they no longer hold any rights. I actually think this is a very mediocre album but the half speed sounds amazing, let me know your thoughts when you do a comparison.

Oh it's not a Superfly release, they just did a special sale with out of print recent records and a few Japanese jazz records from this serie were there.

I think that version was released in Japan before the WRJ was done, maybe 6 months or so, I remember nearly getting it from HMV Japan before the WRJ was announced.

Regarding the sleeve thing sticking out I was referring to this - I think my book isn't bound correctly or is this the case for everyone?

I would store the records outside the book anyway just like AMSP.

Sorry. Didn’t know what you meant. I have not opened book yet but it looks perfectly bound so yes yours looks suspicious. Someone else with it opened may be able to snap you a pic.
