Home Improvement Thread 2: Electric Redo the Loo

Hey all.. first time lurker in this thread.. amazing projects here and thought I’d share mine.

My project started when our kitchen sink/dishwasher drain began to leak in/under our slab. Our kitchen is in the back of the house and the drain travelled the entire diagonal length of the house to the drainage field in the front. You can imagine the mess but here is a little taste. This ran from one side of the house to the other, from the kitchen, through the living room, and into the bathroom.

We had been wanting to do a renovation to the kitchen for years and took the opportunity to refinance and renovate the bottom floor. Incidentally, we got $0 from our homeowners insurance..

Old Kitchen after the corner cabinet had to be removed to dig up pipe… and new kitchen:

We also replaced our existing staircase with a new one. Amazing the difference it made in our opinion.

We’re thrilled with the results. It was a long year and a half, glad we’re finally done.
Six months later and this is what we’re dealing with..A0ABE0B3-984F-4BFD-B789-08D458C2A29F.jpeg
We’re on a slab. Floor installers used no barrier, and here we are.

They are replacing the entire floor free of charge. But all our new trim throughout the entire house will need to be ripped up and lifted to accommodate the new barrier and floor and reinstalled/ refinished.

Sucks. Wish they had listened when I told them I thought it needed a barrier. I installed the previous floor myself 20 years ago, with a barrier, and had zero issues.

So I ordered a new set of blinds for the room I’ve been having done up. Some nice day/night ones.

When I moved in 12 years ago I had blackout blinds done for the whole apartment, that window and both bedrooms. Was about €550 for the lot.

I thought, I’m not so poor now, let’s see how much the electric ones are.

€1350 👀👀👀 🤯🤯🤯

So I went manual. Still €850. €300 more than the whole apartment 12 years ago. Will be fitted at the end of March. Sofa repair man coming later on this week and then I’m officially bankrupt and have to halt big spending until my holiday in May!

Redecoration looks good, I like the soft green!

There will be after pictures, of course.

Wife decided the paint coming off the cabinets was (and she’s right) a problem for new kid. So we are getting new cabinets. My kitchen will be in disrepair until next Friday.

Anyhow, you know the best part of a Reno is demo, right?

And look what I have to make a nice isolation platform for my turntable:

That’s bigger than my stand, so I’m gonna cut of the sides, reseal and pop some isoacoustic oreas under there, BOOM!
