It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

I agree. Along with the US. USMNT did the absolute bare minimum to qualify. They were absolutely terrible away from home. I don't see either going past the round of 16 if they make it out. Mexico have qualified to the Round of 16 in something like 7 straight WC's so they'll probably find a way.

I could be wrong but I’m guessing that with Mexico being by far and away the biggest football country in your confederation that they probably don’t always find it all that easy to get up for all of the qualifying matches and probably underperform to potential and still qualify without too much drama. They always look a handy team with tidy players that maybe just lack that bit of something magic to go further.

That is a very good point

The US team is very soft up front. I miss the McBride, Donavan, or even Dempsey days. They always fought and couldn’t be pushed around.

They are always skillful and technical, but have nothing in the final 3rd. There is always some referee decision that they blame their failures on also.

Whereas I have a real soft spot for Chicarito and fond childhood memories of Campos’ goalie kits from 94 lol!

When he played for Man U he was constantly offside. I was worried when he came to the Galaxy. He had a shaky first year, but he has come around. He’s gone through a lot since, but has come out to be a very positive leader.

Honestly players like him should be caught offside a lot. It’s part of the game of chicken with the back four. Plus they need to keep him offside every time, he only needs to stay onside once. He had a great habbit of scoring key goals and he came across as a really likeable and infectious character.

Rudd managed to stay insides a lot more than he did and they are very much the same type of players. Chicha plays much different now. More like I remember Rooney playing coming back to get the ball at the edge of midfield.

I don’t even remotely know who Rudd is but I’m guessing he won’t ever make it in Europe winning leagues and appearing in a champions league final? I have absolutely nothing negative to say about him at United, selling him was really sad even if it made sense with a Dutch manager favouring a 433 that doesn’t really have a space for him.

Honestly it depended on who we were playing but Rooney was always a player than liked to drift in a match to get on the ball and to influence the match, he didn’t have the patience to make 15 ignored runs behind the defence waiting for the time that the ball would come to him and that’s what a goal scorer operating on the last line needs. When we were dominant they’d very much be 2 up in a 442 but when we were playing better opposition Rooney would often start deeper, rather than just dropping there, and it’d be more of a 4411. Unless of course we were playing a really top team with a deep controlling midfielder, then Rooney would go right up top and Park would come in as an attacking midfield man marker.

Ruud I meant. I doubled the wrong letter. My Dutch is bad.

Oh sorry! Ok! Yes! Ruud wasn’t just a better poacher and last line player he was just an all round better player. He was truly world class rather than a fan favourite or cult hero! He’s the best, most ruthless finisher I’ve ever seen at united. His ratio of 3 goals in every 4 games was frightening! He only left because him and Ronaldo became untenable and Fergie gambled on the kid and was proven pretty spectacularly right!

Also Qatar is tiny. 95% of the World Cup is in Doha. Doha id physically the size of Dublin. If the 5 million people who came to Russia 2018 turned up in Dublin over the course of the month they’d collapse the city and its infrastructure!

The whole temporary stadium thing is insane. These stadiums are going to sit empty afterwards because they don’t have the fans to support them all. It’s all for a 1 month tournament and then it’s over. So wasteful

They should probably designate 3 or 4, maybe 5 permanent locations and just rotate them. The Olympics should also do this.

Sorry, not sorry. I’m going to keep enjoying the sporting element but slating Qatar as a choice of host. Here’s a bit above a brave Norwegian.

Money. The poor people of Qatar. This has a FYRE Fest feel to it. I expect a documentary of the travesty that's already taken place in regard to the labor of the locals to get the frickin grass ready. Let alone resources and infrastructure that's going to be hit.

They're gonna be in over there heads with people itching to travel again too. Worse than 2018 imo.
I think it's harder to collect bribes this way though.
This.
