It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

Yeah it’s got to be difficult in one way as a sort of era defining superstar to accept being a squad player. There’s no way at 37/38 that he can be a regular starter and it’s an absolute credit to how he’s kept himself that at that age he could still have plenty to offer if he could accept that. I suppose the drive that took him to the top doesn’t make space for acceptance of your games being picked and planned out in that way. He’s reaching the space now where its likely to be retire or MLS after the World Cup.

Also hard to take that this is the story after that performance.

I can’t see him going to MLS. I just don’t understand athletes that put themselves first.

I mean he’s been globally feted and praised and had sides built around him because he has increasingly well coordinated feet and the ability to look after himself well. That hardly breeds perspective. But as a fan I agree, it’s a team sport and the team comes first and if he’s not scoring 40-60 goals a season for the team then the team won’t, and shouldn’t, carry the rest.

Does he have any connections there? Wasn’t there speculation that Messi could go there?

A tram in Saudi offered him mega bucks in the summer but he didn’t want to go. There’s been rumour swirling about Miami since he couldn’t get a champions league team in the summer. Since the case against him was dropped the MLS has definiteIy opened up as the obvious option to end his career. I think the weather, profile and the fact he’s from the Iberian peninsula, even if not Spanish, make it a very good match. His finishing, fitness and box movement is still more than good enough for him to score a tonne in the MLS.

To Miami? The connection is Beckham.

With Saudi or Qatar it’s the willingness to throw a ton of money (at least historically) at aging stars. There’re only a couple of mls teams that are still willing to do that. Also I can’t imagine CRonaldo agreeing to live anywhere other than Miami or LA.

Which is kinda funny seeing as although they have United and Madrid in common they were never actually team mates at either.

Do you not think Messi and Ronaldo would be exceptions to the MLS’s recent parsimony with aging stars given their profile, standing and money generating capacity? But I agree they’d both be after lifestyle destinations as much as a club.

You’ve blown my mind! If you had asked me I’d Beckham and Ronaldo had overlapped at United, I would have lost they bet.

He literally replaced Beckham as 7 so there wasn’t very much in it. He was signed just after the lost out to Barca on Ronaldinho as Beckham’s replacement.

Oh, of course. I've killed far too many brain cells since then. If you wear number 7 for united and have an unfortunate haircut you'll blend together in my brain.

The MLS question... I think at this point it has to be a vanity play. Granted Ronaldo or Messi would be on a different level (celebrity wise) than any player ever (except maybe Beckham), I don't think any of the other big names have worked out financially or success-wise. I think at this point it's understood that casual fans who show up once a year aren't the answer, and if Henry, Pirlo, Rooney, Kaku, Lampard, Gerrard, etc. aren't going to move the needle who is?

All that said, I did see Beckham play against red bull in front of 65k in Giants Stadium during his first season (routinely the red bulls would draw around 15k). That was a fun time.

La Galaxy has been talking to him for quite some time. It’s either here it Miami. There are talks about opening up another DP spot in the roster. Teams may have 4 now.

Gerard sucked with his time at LA. Henry has a pretty good run at a player and coach. The rest of those names spent which a little amount of time that they made little impact. Most teams draw around mid 20’s. With the exception of a few clubs.

Arsenal should be up 2 to 0 but instead they're playing 'who can get the ball closest to the side of either post, or the crossbar' without hitting it
