It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

The players will be interesting in all of this. Will they be against it and will the possibility of not representing their countries swing anything. Or will the prospect of the wages that money will enable swing it.

The money might swing it unfortunately.

Interesting that they are pitching it as a replacement to the Champions League rather than a full-on replacement. Would the FA have the guts to demote the 6 to the lowest leagues, and would they care if they were still guaranteed European football? They could almost have 2 separate squads for domestic and European matches.

Any truth to the rumour that Bayern are now joining? I know the 51% fan ownership is a barrier to entry, but seeing the odd tweet about them joining.

There are 3 more slots for founders. I’d be shocked if this goes ahead and they aren’t PSG, Bayern and another, probably Dortmund.

Edit: I take that back Bayern and Dortmund apparently declined the offer. PSG’s reticence is supposedly less noble. They fear that rules will stop them spending to the full protential that their state backing would allow for...

The greed is so disgusting. Declare PSG the CL winner or have Porto, Dortmund, and Bayern come back for the semis. And of course they do this when there are no supporters at any of the stadiums so they can act like there's no blowback. I hope fans safely go out to the Leeds Liverpool match tomorrow and express their displeasure. This has to be stopped.

Reading all the disgust online has me genuinely feeling sick at all this. The power these clubs have is too much and they know they’ll probably get away with it. I would love to see the PL stand firm and tell them to fuck off. If would be an amazing statement. We think that the PL would crumble without those 6 clubs but the public support for that PL decision and public outcry against those 6 clubs would be so strong that maybe the remaining 14 clubs would become more popular and more fans would support them. This is a monumental day. I really hope governments and FAs stand firm along with FIFA banning any players from international tournaments. I also hope some players speak up about this too. But at the end of the day I think this will succeed. Fuck.

I'd throw them out to the lowest league you can, and promote the current top 6 in the Championship. Would turn the EPL into a truly competitive league, and would be really interesting to watch. You could also have a laugh about the rebel 6 fighting with each other as they try to get back-to-back promotions back up: 6 clubs into 3 promotion spots each year would mean that Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea (probably) would be stuck in the lower leagues for longer...

Why should National League teams be denied promotions to the football league to let them back in. If they want to play in England again they can apply to the tier 10 regional leagues like any other new club. These billionaires need to be put in their place.

Oh totally. As low as possible!

So Jose has gone. Random week to do it. Seems like a bit of diversionary tactics here. Deflect a bit of media focus from the shit storm.

I heard he refused to take training after the revelation of the Super League. He is the People's Champion ✊

That was from a whatsapp group chat so could be nonsense

There a bit of that going around Twitter too but nothing yet tied to a pro-Mourinho journalist or another journalist that I’d deem a credible source.

As someone who has always come across as being proudly Portuguese I’d imagine that bypassing the country and the history and tradition of Benfica, Sporting and Porto wouldn’t sit well with him.

Man what a clusterfuck this whole thing is. What worries me is these clubs are essentially all about making money..they wouldn't do something rash like this. It's been analyzed and there's a business case built behind it. They probably have tv deals and sponsorships all lined up already. They don't care about the local match going fans ..they know there's a much larger market at hand to exploit and this will probably wash off the back of most casual fans anyway. No offense to the devoted fans in these countries but in places like the far East, India, north America, the middle East and generally everywhere outside the European countries where these clubs are from, there are lot more people who couldn't care less about things like the footballing pyramid, grassroots, academies and the history of the sport and fair competition.

FIFA/UEFA/The FAs might react to this and try to take actions like stripping titles..do you think that would really hurt these clubs? UEFA and the FAs actually have a lot more to lose when these teams leave their competitions. It could also be a power struggle to put pressure on UEFA reforms coming but that's collusion at its worst. I don't think they're only bluffing and would be prepared to walk if they don't get what they're looking for. That's scary.

I hope players and managers start taking a stand by walking out. No way to claim you're the best league in the world without the best coaches and players.

It's extremely painful for me to see United tied to this. I mean I'm constantly annoyed by the Glazer family but right now I feel absolutely betrayed.

Ownership rules would prevent that from happening in Germany. Something I hope that comes out of this reform from the governments to stabilize making football just a billionaires playground like it is in England right now.

PSG I could imagine is down tor Qatar who is basically in cahoots with FIFA.
