It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

Ownership rules would prevent that from happening in Germany. Something I hope that comes out of this reform from the governments to stabilize making football just a billionaires playground like it is in England right now.

PSG I could imagine is down tor Qatar who is basically in cahoots with FIFA.

I gather PSG object just as strenuously to the proposed spending caps in the greed league as they do the UEFA ones. They basically want to stretch their Qatari financial muscles without restraint. City were supposedly the most reticent of the dirty six for the similar reasons but decided that after campaigning against closed shops for a decade that they weren’t going to get left on the outside shouting at another closed shop.

Also all the journalists are quashing rumours surrounding Jose and super league protests, the decision was made on Friday evening and communicated today.
I said to my dad on Saturday night that Jose might get axed soon, so it's not a total surprise.

Jurgen Klopp came out pretty hard against the Super League in 2019. I hope he doesn't pass up the opportunity to speak out today. He's the type of voice the supporters need right now. I'm normally always looking forward to a Liverpool match. What does it matter now? We're not fighting for top 4 since it no longer makes a difference in getting into UCL.

So Jose has gone. Random week to do it. Seems like a bit of diversionary tactics here. Deflect a bit of media focus from the shit storm.
I would be over the moon if this happened last week. But with now with the Super League crap I really don't care
I heard he refused to take training after the revelation of the Super League. He is the People's Champion ✊

Jose may be a dinosaur, but he does respect the cups and the league. The rumor is bollocks but I would not be surprised if he was against it. I'd have major respect for him.

Jurgen absolutely should! Plus he could fall back onto Bayern and/or Dortmund or any other German club if Liverpool are upset about him speaking out and decide to sack him

I'd throw them out to the lowest league you can, and promote the current top 6 in the Championship. Would turn the EPL into a truly competitive league, and would be really interesting to watch. You could also have a laugh about the rebel 6 fighting with each other as they try to get back-to-back promotions back up: 6 clubs into 3 promotion spots each year would mean that Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea (probably) would be stuck in the lower leagues for longer...
I’d go much farther. The national associations should ban those teams from all national competitions (EPL, FA Cup, La Liga, etc) and make the Super League the only competition those super rich teams will get to participate in. Basically lock them out of the European soccer pyramid, and say that if they want to reenter then they must start at the relative bottom (third or fourth tier, depending on the country). That’s already what happens when teams go into administration.

I don’t agree with the idea to punish the players (e.g. ban them from the World Cup), because it’s not their fault that this vile league is moving forward. It also feels wrong to use the players as pawns in this dispute

The players being banned is a move to hopefully get those players to leave those teams and the whole ESL will crumble. The point of the ESL is having the best play the best. No one will want to watch and no players will want to join if they cannot play for their country. I think we'll see some players starting to speak out about this soon. Ozil, Ander Herrera, Podolski, and Bruno Fernandes already made some comments. It's going to get spicy.

I get that this is the idea, I just strongly disagree with that approach.

This Is Anfield (the main Liverpool site I read) have already switched back to FSG OUT! There's already talk that multiple supporters groups want their banners removed from the Kop for this weekend's match with Newcastle. I hope they all pull their banners as the Kop end would like dismal without all the pageantry that's normally there even in this crappy fan less environment. FSG don't care about the supporters, just the money they pay to take in a match. This super league is nothing more than further NFL-ication of the European football.

The greed and disregard for history is appalling.

As far as Arsenal/Liverpool/United go, it's tone deaf American billionaires to blame. I think, if you look at the ownership groups of these teams, they're almost all foreign and/or private equity driven, so that says something. You've got to be a real shithead to make FIFA or UEFA look like the good guys.

I don't have a "team" in Europe, but I am really interested to see how the fans react. The Liverpool stuff is promising.

And Ceferin is spitting fire today: ESPN Link.

"[Agnelli is] probably the biggest disappointment of all. I don't want to be too personal, but I have never seen a person who lied so many times as persistently as he did. I spoke to him on Saturday and he said these were only rumours, nothing going on. Then he turned off the phone. Greediness is so strong that all the human values evaporate. It's always good to know in life, who is who."

I think it's 100% a reaction by groups like Fenway Sports Group and other American owners to what City, PSG, and Chelsea are able to do financially. Those latter 3 aren't run as for profit companies. FSG has to balance what they spend versus what they sell, player wise. The problem is FSG sees Liverpool as a revenue stream to be maximized. They don't care about the city of Liverpool or the working class supporters who have lived and died with this club for over 100 years. When I was there to watch a match in 2018, I saw how FSG was buying up older homes around Anfield to put up shiny, new apartments that the average citizen of the city couldn't afford. Even where I sat for the match was something designed to maximize profit, the club package. It's great for Americans wanting to come over for a match but the average working class person over there, the life blood of the EPL, isn't signing up for that. Where they sit is passed down generation to generation. That's what FSG doesn't get. There's even talk that those fans are "legacy fans". They only use those supporters to maximize the profitability of the club. They use all the things that make Liverpool a unique club as a tool to promote the product, get a better kit distribution deal, or to try to get enhancements to Anfield to get even more high end revenue.

I think UK Parliament really needs to step in and shock the system a bit.

Compulsory sale orders to protect the interests of British business would be an interesting development. We've been hearing from the start with the Glazers that they've been utterly perplexed by ideas such as joint rights bargaining across the league and the existence of promotion and relegation to and from the Premier League. They want an NFL style closed shop and this is their attempt to get one.
