January 2023 Spinning Challenge: Welcome To 2023

Day 9: Fuck Chad, it’s MoFi Monday
Play me something released by MoFi.

Weezer - Weezer

Did not realize that I only own two MoFi records, and they’re both Weezer. Could be that listening to them made me feel pretty underwhelmed about MoFi presses. I also have a hard time spending more than $40 for a single album (which is why I feel myself getting priced out of this hobby). My turntable is MoFi, though…

Not the version MoFi released, but they did release a version. This version is the one my friend snagged from the bargain bin to give me. It's a first Canadian pressing (he's got a knack for grabbing first Canadian pressings from the bargain bin and not even knowing until I look them up later) and sounds quite lovely!

Day 10: Top 10
Play me one of your top 10 albums of all time.

On a nondescript 1980 Sunday after a weekend back home, I was driving back to college in Chapel Hill, NC. UNC had a smokin' college station - WXYC - that was founded only 3 years prior. Every time I left Interstate 40 for Hwy 501 commencing the last 20 miles to Chapel Hill, I always turned off my cassette (yes kids, cassette) and tuned into 89.3 on the FM dial as it was in range.

On this particular Sunday, I was greeted with an incredible instrumental. Two guitars were trading off beautiful leads augmented by what I can only describe as a third lead in the form of a bass. It was rock. It was jazz. The interplay was absolutely electric, and then this thing broke down into a groove. Jesus - is this Sweet Jane? Lou kicks into the vocal and I have confirmation. How have I never heard this live version before?

After the song ends, the DJ recaps the set. Now I've got the knowledge I need. I blow into Chapel Hill, blow past my apartment, blow onto Franklin St. and blow into Schoolkids Records and buy one of the greatest LPs of all-time, live or otherwise...

Lou Reed - Rock N Roll Animal

WXYC is still kickin' and as good as ever. Fun fact - in '94 they were the first station in the world to transmit their broadcast via the internet.

This album has all the things I love about Neil. Wry observation and storytelling in extended form (Rockin' in the Free World, Crime in the City), gentle acoustic tracks with gorgeous harmonies (Ways of Love, Wrecking Ball), and some of his heaviest and angriest guitar playing (On Broadway, Don't Cry).

Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

I woke up with the title track stuck in my head so this is the perfect opportunity to spin it! I haven’t reevaluated my top 10 in years but this has to still be in it

Wolf Parade Apologies to The Queen Mary - I don't think I could ever make a top 10 list of my all-time favorite records and be happy with it but if forced to try this one would be there! I love this record and never get sick of listening to it even with a headcold that makes everything sound like it's being played through a tin can....
