Day 12: Big In Japan
In honour of all the great Japanese presses I’ve bought. Interpret this as you please.
Tears for Fears - Songs From The Big Chair
Even though I have a pristine original version I just had to add this Japanese release of Songs From The Big Chair to my collection when given the chance. Sorry about that pesky advert @Joe Mac but I just love an obi!
Went digging in the CD collection for something I hadn’t listened to for a while. I could be 10 or 15 years since I last listened to it. It actually holds up relatively well!
Looks like she put her foot back in her mouth regarding the cultural appropriation on this album. There was an article about it back in 2016 that really nails it on the topic but sadly it doesn’t exist anymore, all I have is this image of it
Also shout out to MadTv for this sketch that I just learned about
Day 12: Big In Japan
In honour of all the great Japanese presses I’ve bought. Interpret this as you please. The Beatles - Let It Be...Naked
Japan pressing, and The Beatles are big in Japan as they are everywhere.
Day 13: Friday Night Soul
Play me some smooth soul music fit for a Friday night.
Alice Clark - Alice Clark This was a RSD release a few years back. It was one of those albums that I had no clue about when the list of releases was initially announced but as I researched the unfamiliar titles, this one quickly sprung to the top of my list. Such a beautiful album all the way through.
I do have a pair of Stevie Wonder Japanese pressings as well as some jazz classics but instead decided to take this opportunity to play this monumental meet-up of the New York free jazz and Japanese free music scenes of the 70s that I picked up in my Boxing Day Blowout Bin raids last year. @Joe Mac would most certainly hate this, but I'm really enjoying it so far. I grabbed this pretty much blind other than knowing it was free jazz and was pleased to discover William Parker, for whom I've developed a strong appreciation over the past couple of years, was playing bass here with Ahmed Abdullah, of Sun Ra's Arkestra, on trumpet! This reissue is fabulous all around - good pressing, quality jacket, informative liner notes and a great set of photos in the gatefold that provide an exciting glimpse of this short-lived cultural exchange at the height of the NY Loft Scene.
