Play a single

Hairy Diamond "Torture" - most of my 45's are just in generic sleeves so I thought I'd play one with a cover, and what a cover! This is also a heavy record, like it might be a 180g 45! Doesn't sound like a soundtrack to a trashy novella which was a bit of a disappointment!

Day 2: Hangover
I suppose technically the hangover was yesterday but still. Play an album to soothe a well earned sore head!

I'm a few days late on the challenge but as luck would have it I happen to be a wee bit hungover today! Sampha, take me away with your smooth voice.

Glen Phillips - Swallowed by the New

Glen Phillips is my favorite singer songwriter, full stop. His 2016 album Swallowed by the New features the incredibly sad yet hopeful song Go.

In Glen's words: “The song was written about that (lighthouse) metaphor,” Phillips explains, “the idea of breaking up being this act of love. Lighthouses are like that; Most styles of love are ‘Come here. Come be as close to me as possible,’ whereas the general message of a lighthouse is, ‘I care so much about you, you should go way over there, as far from me as possible.’ That’s what the song is about, the idea of breaking up being this act of love, the most compassionate thing you can do. It’s inherently a sad song, a breakup song, but it’s about that being an act of compassion rather than severance.”

Please check out the video below and any and all of Glen's solo work!

Day 6: Live
Play me an album by one of the best live artists you have seen.

Buffy Sainte-Marie – Coincidence & Likely Stories

I remember her from Seasame Street when I was growing up, and have always known her music, but it was just over a decade ago when I finally got to see her live for the first time as the headliner of a festival in Manitoba I performed at an emceed annually for a decade or so. I got to do a poem right before introducing the dance troupe she came out to and then watched her entire 90-minute set from the most crowded side stage I ever experienced at the festival. She was 70 that year and still rocked WAY harder than most younger performers I've ever seen. The young drummer she had with her had the hardest snare most of us had ever seen - when we asked him about it after the show he replied, "they had a back-up snare ready for me - I thought they wanted me to try and break one!" Brilliant.

I've seen her a couple of times since, and even without that first-time magic and super close proximity, she has been nothing short of amazing every time. She is an absolute treasure in so many ways.
