January 2023 Spinning Challenge: Welcome To 2023

Day 3: Three is the Magic Number
Play a wonderful third album by an artist you love.

Zeal & Ardor – Zeal & Ardor

This self-titled third album was my introduction to the band and immediately after that first listen I spent a lot of hours listening to this and the rest of their catalogue (2 more albums, 1 live album, 1 EP and 1 forthcoming Sub Pop Singles Club 7", currently available for streaming) - in fact I've been on a bit of a kick again this week, particularly with the Sub Pop single, for which I also just got my shipping notice!

Day 6: Live
Play me an album by one of the best live artists you have seen.

Hands down best concert I've been to. I don't have any on vinyl, sadly.
I saw them in 2018 on the Skeleton Tree Tour, hope I get another chance.

Day 4: Lyrics

mewithoutYou - Brother, Sister

Aaron Weiss is probably my favourite lyricist, apart from maybe Dylan. The closer, "In a Sweater Poorly Knit," especially:

"Go plow some other field, and try and forget my name
We'll see what harvest yields, and, supposing I'd do the same
I planted rows of peas, by the first week of July
They should have come up to my knees
But they were maybe ankle high
Take the fingers from your flute to weave your colored yarns
And boil down your fruit to preserves in mason jars
And the books are overdue and the goats are underfed
The trap I set for you seems to have caught my leg instead"

(Also realizing I've played only third albums so far.)

Day 6: Live
Play me an album by one of the best live artists you have seen.

DMV Live Trax 6.25.10

In the 90s there were few bands who put on as great a show as DMB. I stopped listening to them for about a decade, but have recaptured some of those memories in the last couple years listening to their live sets on vinyl. Even though this one is from past peak, it's still an excellent listen.

The National - Boxer (Live In Brussels)

I love live music and have been to lots of fantastic shows over my time. The National have been a group that I’ve seen live the most over the past 20 years and one that I hope to see again sometime soon. In the meantime, I have several of their live performances on wax to keep me company.

Day 6: Live

I actually haven’t seen any live shows, mostly because I hate crowds & loud noise that I have no control over. I came close to seeing this guy tho…

Ice Cube - AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted

Ice Cube was playing at K-Days (a local yearly festival) back in 2019 I think. I’d thought about going the day he was performing, but I’d completely forgotten about it until I saw an IG story from one of my friends who’d gone to see him. I nearly saw Crystal Waters last year as well, but I decided to leave before the rain came down.

Dap-Dippin' with Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings - any time I had the privilege to see Ms Sharon Jones live it was such a joyful experience...small club or fancy theatre she always brought an energy and excitement that just washed over you and brought so much joy!

I've gotten more like you in the last several years, but I did get to see him in a small venue in Boulder Colorado when my friend was able to get me into the owners booth to watch the show so I didn't have to be by anyone. It was awesome.

12/11/88, Long Beach Arena. My first Dead show and they kick right into it with Iko Iko. From that point on it completely changed on how I looked for and listened to live music. It was no longer about hearing how the song sounded on the album, but how the song sounded in the moment.

Day 1: Happy New Year
Raise a wee dram to see in the new year and pick a great album to accompany

I haven’t participated in a challenge since May or June. Life has been pretty tumultuous the past six months or so. My living situation has been in flux and I haven’t had access to my entire collection. But things have settled and I’ve got a new place as of last weekend (just in time for New Year’s). I have almost no furniture but I do have the essentials, including my turntable.

So here’s the first spin of the year and in my new place! Out of alcohol but will remedy that after work.

Local H - As Good As Dead

Ive probably seen them live more than any other band. It helps they used to always play multiple shows in Milwaukee every year back in the 00's, and I've seen every incarnation of a drummer they've had. They come out for their shows with an insane amount of energy for a 2-piece, and is always a good time. Unfortunately I missed their NYE show here, but last saw them about 4 years ago where they were still able to match that same energy from when I first saw them like 25 years ago.

LOL, I didn't see your post before posting my selection. Great minds...
