January Challenge - The Music Awakens…

January 13: Jedi vs. Sith – Play something that captures a battle of light and dark (or, perhaps, loud and soft)

The Flaming Lips "At War With The Mystics" (2006 Warner)
Went with this. An album with a war between wizards and mystics an the overarching theme, although it's mostly a series of meditations on social issues during the Bush era. A song like "It’s Dark…Is It Always This Dark??" helped in cementing this selection. Seems to obliquely fit the Star Wars theme. Side note, the lyric in Free Radicals "You're turning into a poor man's Donald Trump" (!!!), referencing Bush I think, is so prescient for 2006!

January 14: Lightsaber Clash – Spin an intense, high-energy track.

Daniel Romano's Outfit "Too Hot To Sleep" (2024 You've Changed Records)
Good old Canadian boy Daniel Romano going full out punk with his band Outfit. Highly recommend if you like pop-punk and power pop. The whole album exudes high energy, but I'll go with the track "Field of Ruins" to soundtrack a furious light saber duel. The lyrics fit surprisingly well!

Standing in a field of ruins
I kind of like the way it feels
In the dust of an ancient empire
Life is like a spinning wheel

January 16: Cloud City Sound
Pick something that feels smooth and futuristic

Low - Double Negative

I could try to spin it a bit but the honest truth is I missed the “Smooth” part and only focused on the “Futuristic” portion of todays prompt. Lows music feels like the future but it’s more based around dissonance relationship to beauty and as such probably wouldn’t be described as “smooth”.

January 15: Hoth Chill – Choose a song/album that evokes a frosty, isolated atmosphere.

Radiohead "Kid A" (2000 Capitol; 2016 XL Recordings reissue)
From the icy mountains on the cover to the cold electronics sprinkled throughout. To me the synths backing Everything In Its Right Place evoke the sound of whistling winds...

Double Negative followed by Kid A this is a nice 1-2 punch.

Lots of retro-futuristic-smooth grooves here that Lando would have pre-emptively queued up to be playing in the background when he makes comments like this:

Day 17: The Best Pilot in the Resistance
Play something bold, rebellious or, maybe, a little reckless

Morgan Wade - Reckless
IMG_3903.jpeg

I would argue that beyond just the name of her album, Morgan Wade has been fairly reckless with her career leaning into tabloid fodder in ways that have been a bit detrimental to her follow up album. I hope she steers clear of that moving forward because this albums is really good and would love to be able to listen to her music without having to think about Kyle Richards.
