January Challenge - The Music Awakens…

January 26: Secrets of the Sith – Play an album with a hidden track

Going digital for an album I haven't thought of in years. I spent a few years in Minnesota, and discovered this band while I was there via the late, great Rev105 radio station. Outside of the linked track, which was a hidden track on the CD version of this album and has become a hockey arena staple, I don't think they hit any level of success. Which is a shame, because it is a great album. If you like early Jayhawks / Wilco / etc, definitely give this one a spin.

They repressed this a couple years back, but I think only sold it at the shows and I couldn't get a copy. Great, fun record!

The Crane Wives - Coyote Stories / Foxlore

I resisted Folk for quite some time and then Damien Rice blew it open for me, in terms of Folk/Americana/Singer-Songwriter. From there, I've still been selective, but I've followed the Crane Wives since they were in college. They're also hometown grown and native to the West Michigan area, so I'd catch many shows in the early days. Fantastic young humans, and I'd recommend seeing them live if/when you have the chance.

Back in my college days I was definitely a 'instrument' purist, and avoided albums if it was all synthesizers and other electronics. I've since changed my tune on that and really appreciate what can be done with them, and the complexity of the construction. This duo has certainly been a part of that conversion, and are so much fun live.

My grandpa was an amateur but a very accomplished, self-taught bluegrass banjo player. That music wasn't exactly my vibe, but as a kid I really admired how effortlessly he could get down.

In the late 80's, I was about 5 years into this live taping thing, and I invested in my first quality recorder, a Sony WM-D3. My grandpa would occasionally trek up the mountain to Boone and have a pickin' session with old friends. I showed him how to use my deck and he took it along one day. He enjoyed documenting their jams so much he bought one for himself. It's cool to have some of his recorded material all these years later. And my appreciation of bluegrass, especially the artists he held dear, has definitely grown.

January 28: A Galaxy Far, Far Away – Choose something that is not from your country.

As much as we want legal weed, healthcare, and Neil Young to be bastions of the US, they are all bastions of Canada.

Everyone from anywhere but here - we humbly ask for your good vibes. We're gonna need all we can get.

Disclaimer - I did not aid in letting this con man filled clown car onto the parking deck.

And preemptive apologies to our global friends for the inevitable stupid shit that will find you in the next 4 years. We're dealing with a piece of crap...

As a teenager I was mainly into hip-hop & jazz and I actively resisted most forms of modern rock music (nu-metal, alternative & indie rock specifically). It wasn't until my early 20s that I started coming around on a lot of it and this album did help a bit.
