January Challenge - The Music Awakens…

Day 27: The Resistance
Play a genre you resisted to, but ended up appreciating.

Jimmy Smith - Root Down: Jimmy Smith Live!

I didn’t have patience for a lot of music until I hit my early 30s. Jazz in particular was completely lost on me. My gateway came in the form of Jazz-Funk and Jazz-Fusion thanks to Hip-Hop samples. This one is an obvious one from The Beastie Boys cut that shares it’s name.

January 29: Endor Serenity – Folk music day!

Utah Phillips – We Have Fed You All A Thousand Years

Gonna have to give this a listen. My Dad and I spent a lot of time laughing at Moose Turd Pie when it was played on Dr. Demento over the years, and while i knew there was a lot more to Utah Phillips than that, I never searched it out.

Day 26: Secrets of the Sith
Play an album with a hidden track

Stone Temple Pilots - Purple

The hidden track “Second Album” starts up after a few minutes of dead air at the conclusion of “Kitchenware & Candybars”.

The second album, twelve gracious melodies... to listen. Include this number, keeping you company.

January 29: Endor Serenity – Folk music day!

Ryan Davis & The Roadhouse Band "Dancing On The Edge" (2023 Sophomore Lounge)
How about a genre I resisted, but never ended up appreciating? This would be it. But apparently this classifies according to Discogs, so who knows? Feels more like alt-country or americana, like Wilco, to me. But if it's folk, maybe there's a chance...

I recommend The Past Didn't Go Anywhere with Ani Difranco. It's near the top of my "this needs a vinyl pressing" list. She took a bunch of his recordings and set them to music. The guy was something very special. I was on tour with a musician friend of mine when Utah passed. It was a very sad day for both of us, but holy heck did he have a life well lived.

[Edit to add:] The coolest part of this album is that it was all recorded in places I have lived here in BC!

January 30: Skeleton Crew – Spin a young artist!

OutKast "Southernplaylisticadillacmuzik" (1994 LaFace Records; 2019 club reissue)
They were 18 and 19 when this was released.
