Jazz

Got a back in stock alert, looks like they did another run. Dusk fire is also back in stock.

I’ve been reading up on on a small label called SRP (Self Reliance Project) set up by Milford Graves and Don Pullen back in the the 60’s and it’s really interesting. They basically had a handful of self releases including a live recording at Yale university. It was super DIY (kind of like Sun Ra and his Arkestra) and the Yale record has a hand painted sleeve which Milford Graves (the drummer) painted himself. The music is really out there (very avant-garde) but super enjoyable. Would make for an interesting reissue series.

Apparently Charles Mingus has a similar set up of a mail order only label, which he soon sold on to an established company - that’s my next rabbit hole.

Here’s a couple of links to the SRS releases:

Yeah, these are kinda white whales for folks like me. I think I even guessed one of these when Storf promised us a free jazz album and delivered a poorly recorded bop session, lol.

This is another interesting one. Ornette Coleman at the Lenox School of Jazz. Eil have the Italian Club edition but £500 is out of my league. Would love to see bits like this get reissued.

I don't have enough money to follow you all, I already burnt my budget for June...

And I still have a few records to grab at my favorite local record stores Balades Sonores and Superfly AND I have to visit Heartbeat too as they received a haul of records from Japan...

I'm so lucky I don't live in Paris. If I lived anywhere remotely close to Heartbeat, I would be homeless in no time.

Yep Storf. I sold my Lloyd record ,was so disappointed with that pick. Haha.those days are behind me now 😅

This is FANTASTIC! Just the kind of history I love reading about, with great music to match. Thanks for this @Mr Moore! I’ve been really interested in finding (as in YouTube or represses, the original records are way too expensive) small/ private press Japanese jazz records which tend to have interesting stories attached to them as well.
I already have 4 records the owner kept for me + the Cotonete/Di Melo new release and I'll certainly want something else. I am spending 200 to 300€ in this shop. Then I'll go to Superfly and on Monday I visit les Balades Sonores.

At this point @Skalap it’s probably worth you just buying shares in Superfly. Recoup some of that money back :ROFLMAO:

Hope you guys are picking up the Strata-East reissues being put out by Pure Pleasure. I have no doubt that within a year, these will be gone forever. Spinning some Charles Brackeen. His debut. He's joined by Don Cherry, Ed Blackwell, and Charlie Haden. Having Ornette's band as sidemen on your first record as a leader is just about as good as it gets.

I bought the last two I was missing yesterday. There are Tribe and Nimbus West reissues too that I strongly recommend.

I need to get this one. It’s an awesome album. Also, if you all haven’t yet, get the Pure Pleasure reissue of Clifford Jordan’s Glass Bead Games. It’s stunning.

Can anyone comment on the Speakers Corner Miles Smiles reissue? Sort of leaning towards grabbing this press as it’s about half the cost of the MoFi.

But if the MoFi is vastly superior, I’ll spring for that.

Never heard a single MOFI but struggle to believe there is a notable improvement on stuff that Speakers Corner or Pure Pleasure release as they sound Grade A to me. For us Europeans it’s a no brainier with the cost difference.

I think Pure Pleasure and Speakers Corner are more consistent than MoFi. Every single record I have from those two places sounds excellent. MoFi, some are awesome and others are just good.
