Jazz

My copy just arrived today, it sounds great. I got a few elemental records a couple of years ago and wasn't that impressed, but this sounds great. I see they have a lot in stock at Jazz messengers, a few Dexter Gordon & a few more Barney Wilen, any suggestions on good titles to pick up from Elemental?
I think this is my first Jazz title from them actually. I have a couple of Brazilian albums from the label that sound fine. I might pick up a Woody Shaw title at some point. Anything by him is worth a listen imo.

Binker Moses latest album, the live 'Escape The Flames' is out today as well. Cant wait to dig into this one, the sample track was just amazing. I saw Binker Golding live a while ago and was blown away, he really adds another level when live, so I imagine this whole album will be great!

Really looking forward to this one.

I thought this would be a good place to share my views on the Resonance Records release 'Bill Evans - Live At Ronnie Scotts'. I posted it on Instagram as part of my Black Friday pick-ups earlier today and have had a few comments and messages saying the quality of this one, in particular, is really poor. I have just listened to the first LP now (about to pop the second one on) and I have to say that I think the criticism is harsh. It's clearly not a high-quality studio recording but I wouldn't say it's terrible either. It was recorded on an amateur set-up by Jack DeJohnette but each instrument is clear, without one overpowering the other and the audience claps at the end just add to the experience for me, although I know some people don't like this either.

A few of you might remember that I picked up a whole load of cassettes back in the summer, many of which were recorded live at Ronnie Scotts and some of them were recorded on an amateur set-up which was likely to be similar to that which DeJohnette used for the Evans recording (although quite a few were recorded by being plugged into a secondary port which shared the mic's). With these, there is a very similar quality BUT the Evans has certainly been cleaned up a lot and the decent mastering has definitely helped.

Overall I'm just glad a recording of this session exists at all. I think much of the 'disappointment' is a result of Resonance shooting themselves in the foot by having a lot of high-quality releases already. I think they would have benefitted by adding a note to the release which highlights the amateur recording, much in the same way that labels like Sam Records note issues with certain tracks (if there is any).

I would be interested to know what other people who bought this thinks.

For thos who missed the first Jazz in Britain release. A very limited of signed copies are back in stock:

EDIT: As I write it, out of fourteen copies there are only three available.

Managed to get one, which is really exciting......although literally last week I ordered one from Japan :ROFLMAO:

I'm still waiting for my copy, but your review makes sense. I think they all should pay more attention to managing customer expectations and highlighting recording quality & notes in the marketing literature (particularly with these RSD releases where everyone purchases effectively on a pre-order without reviews).

I'm looking forward to giving at a spin.

Too late - looks like a slept on this. Managed to pick up a copy of the Harry Becket though, no idea if it was a good deal or not, but I really liked the Cadillac Harry Becket re-issue and it went from 6 - 4 copies left whilst I opened up the page.

Looks like a good deal to me. I didn't pick it up but will likely regret it.

Im probably going to list for sale the copy of the Ray Russell I bought from Japan when it arrives. I'm just going to put it up for the price I paid, so if you are interested just let me know (although with shipping it was an eye-watering £45).

Thanks, I will have a think about it, but will probably pass for the moment. My vinyl expenditure has been far too excessive of late. I should really buy some Christmas presents :)

Yeah I completely understand. I was bought it as a Christmas present to myself (thinking I will likely get a bit of cash over the period) so used that to justify the purchase (as I usually do :ROFLMAO:)

I have a question for you Wax Buyers Club members (@Skalap, this might be one you could answer). I was just looking at the Jef Gilson Big Band ‎– Jef Gilson A Gaveau and noticed that the Wax Buyers club version has a different track ordering. Is this correct? I assumed it was the same pressing but a different jacket etc? Is it a live version or something?

Just spotted this:

I'm hoping they will do a vinyl release, I loved the RSD release of vol. 1

edit - I'm feeling I might have to buy a CD player again, with the amount of great jazz that seems to be available only on CD :(
They've released another in the Autograph series too (Ramon Valle - Innerstate). I'm just a jazz toedipper but I streamed it and bloody loved it... So I bought it. Not sure if its still working but Jazz21 gets 10 euros of a 50 euro purchase

I'll try that out later

The one with the blue jacket, for this months membership, is a live version. I signed up for that record basically. I don't think there are going to be many copies available elsewhere, but maybe some from Sam records direct.
