Jazz

Any thoughts on VMP’s Presige releases, beginning with Sonny Rollins?
They seem to be just a limited color variant of the remaster that already exists from OJC.
I think someone posted the link for it a few pages back. Around $13 USD for the OJC pressing.

As an FYI I put the order in for the VMP exclusive of this so when I eventually get it I can update you guys on the quality. I still have a load of credit available so unless something major pops up on the store I expect I will be getting the others in the series as well.

Yeah you don’t need the coloured vinyl, just get an OJC, save the money for some more music.
Wow. Just wow. Big mark-up for an “exclusive” color. I’m weary of all the exclusive shit, honestly. I just want the record to enjoy damnit! See, now I’m all flustered and need a drink. Thankfully, the Mrs. found watermelon rum at the state store, and with a little Sprite, well that goes down like kool-aid!

+1

Also I think we need to add ‘Famous Sounds of the TBM is the best sounding record ever’ to our banners @Skalap :ROFLMAO:

I've just got the famous sounds of the 3 blind mice and am blown away by the sound. everything else I have sounds poor in comparison.

Has anyone picked up any of the other Impex releases? Legrand's Jazz, or Greensleeves? are they just as good?

What's the deal with the 'Super Vinyl', it's obviously an RTI pressing but is 'super vinyl' any different to the normal RTI pressings?

I can't say, I only have this one and I agree with, it sounds superb. @Speedracer bought Greensleeves, he can answer you :)

I’ve got a few Impex, Michel Legrand, Miles @ Blackhawk, 3 blind mice, Miles ESP, they are all pretty good, but the sound depends on the the original recording. I would have to have another listen to Legrand, but it’s regarded as a great recording, I’ve got the 33, but there is a 45 coming,or recently released that Hoffman was raving over on his site.

Last night I was listening to music, thumbing through my record shelf and came across... an OJC pressing of Saxophone Colossus! It'a the one with the mastering details scratched out in the run out. This would be completely unremarkable, but I had thought I didnt own it yet and have already purchased the 2017 QRP version mastered by Kevin Graya few days ago right after the VMP version was announced. Let this be a lesson to everyone to keep your discogs updated! Don't know how this one slipped through the cracks. Guess I'll be selling real cheap or PIF'ing one of these.

Hey guys. Need some recommendations. I know nothing about Jazz other than I dig Bill Evans. Going to buy some of his stuff. I've seen in Jazz there's really great, decent and then some awful pressings. Any I should stay away from? I was looking at Wax Time earlier. Is that good? Priced well...

Any recommendations on good, or bad pressings to stay away from, would be helpful. Thanks.

No, Wax Time, DOL , etc are European grey market releases which means they don't have permission to release these so artists don't get payed , and they would almost certainly be from a CD, so no point in buying on vinyl except for the bigger cover . You need to stick to actual record companies, i.e Universal, Sony etc to get proper releases, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will be a great pressing/mastering. There is a lot of info in this thread and the Blue Note thread about various pressings, etc ,ask about specific titles and I'm sure someone will point you in the right directon . The latest Blue Note Tone Poet releases are excellent and the 80th Anniversary seem to be pretty good as well, for a cheaper option .

Thanks. I appreciate your help.

Looking for Sunday at Village Vanguard. Can someone recommend a decent pressing? I see a decently priced one on Amazon from Fantasy Records...any good?

Is it Fantasy/Original Jazz Classic ?? That could be all right, it was originally on Riverside but a lot were released on OJC in the 80's and beyond , earlier pressings were AAA apparently but it's hard to tell without reading the deadwax , I had a few Monk OJC and they sounded great !
Thanks. I appreciate your help.

IMO the best value in Bill Evans records (as well as several other artists that recorded for Riverside) is the Milestone two-fer series of reissues from the 1970s. These are all AAA repackagings of classic albums that usually don't cost much because Milestone changed the album titles so it's not easy to see them and know what's inside. "Spring Leaves," for example, is actually Portrait in Jazz and Explorations, the two of Evans's studio efforts with bassist Scott LaFaro. Both are amazing albums, and there's a set for $9 right now. The only downside is that the order of the songs is sometimes changed for these reissues.

Here's the one that has both Village Vanguard sessions

This one has Everybody Digs Bill Evans

This one has Moon Beams and How My Heart Sings

Great info. I have an Art Blakey compilation in this series that I got at an op shop for $1 recently, this provides some context. Seems like a great option for picking up some fantastic music.

I Picked up Greensleeves! best sounding record I own. Even better than any Music Matters/Analogue Productions/Mofi, which seems almost impossible. But I think it's because of how well the record was recorded. It just sounds so lifelike, it's incredible.
