Jazz

Rather infuriatingly my copy of 'Ashley Henry - Ashley Henry's 5ive' is really warped. I emailed their customer service (offering to send them a video of the warp if they could provide an email address to send it to) and they said they are happy to replace it but I need to send it to them first, along with a copy of the postage receipt (presumably so they will refund the shipping).

I get that they shouldn't be left out of pocket, but its so inconvenient to have to find/buy a mailer, pack it all up, and go to the post office to post it, and then wait for X amount of time for a replacement to arrive (and then further hope that copy isn't warped).

IMO the best value in Bill Evans records (as well as several other artists that recorded for Riverside) is the Milestone two-fer series of reissues from the 1970s. These are all AAA repackagings of classic albums that usually don't cost much because Milestone changed the album titles so it's not easy to see them and know what's inside. "Spring Leaves," for example, is actually Portrait in Jazz and Explorations, the two of Evans's studio efforts with bassist Scott LaFaro. Both are amazing albums, and there's a set for $9 right now. The only downside is that the order of the songs is sometimes changed for these reissues.

Here's the one that has both Village Vanguard sessions

This one has Everybody Digs Bill Evans

This one has Moon Beams and How My Heart Sings
Yes the complete village vanguard twofer is fantastic! Sounds so great and then you get both the Sunday at Village Vanguard and Waltz For Debby albums in one set (Different track list).

Anyone know how this sounds and if its a good deal?

Looks to be the going rate. Seems like it is the CD master from ‘05 cut to vinyl. Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing. I think it might be the only way to get the entire 1961 recordings with the alternate takes and all on vinyl. If you really love it, I would almost just get the CD and get the actual albums (Sunday and Waltz) separately on vinyl unless you do want those alternate takes and a vinyl box set. You can easily buy both albums on vinyl and the CD for less than $80.

No comment on the sound except it sounds fine on Spotify whenever I play it. Not the best comparison at all though ;)

Not sure where to post this query so I will copy paste this to a couple threads, so sorry for the spam.

I have a question regarding Amazon USA import fees deposit. Basically, I'm looking at ordering 4 Blue Note Tone Poets from Amazon USA to the UK. When I select the 7-9 Business days ($12.96) an import fee deposit of $20 is added which makes the total £114 (£28.50 each) but when I select 7-11 Business days (still $12.96) the import fee deposit is not added and brings the price down to £95 (£23.75 each - a much better deal). By selecting the longer delivery time (7-11) are Amazon covering the import fee deposit or am I likely to still get hit by charges?

Cheers.

MPS is a label from the 60's & 70's that released a lot of Jazz. I have a couple of OG's that sound great but they are now doing re-issues alongside new releases. I don't know what the re-issues are like but might be worth checking out.

Gilles Peterson is a huge MPS fan. Don't own a record from the label myself, but I hear the sound quality of them is supposed be very good. From what I've read, the reissues are done right. They have this AAA reissues series going on: https://www.discogs.com/label/1081725-AAA-Reissue-Series

I've never tried it but I suspect your latter suggestion. I'm guessing that the faster option is the only option that provides the pre-paid service and the slower option will enter customs in the traditional manner and be subject to scrutiny and potential fees. I suggest you take one for the team and give it a whirl. ;)

EDIT:

Actually, this little disclaimer suggests that you would definitely be subject to customs issues on the cheaper option:

I decided to go for the import fee deposit option. I paid it on the Cornbread I got this week and was refunded it because they didn't use it. At the worst I will have paid the going rate for each, and at the best I will have gotten a good deal. Plus I had a $10 voucher from a previous Amazon error so its all good.

Cheers @Mr Moore (y)

Thanks for the insight. I don't have a CD player. I'll keep searching.

Any one know if this would sound better than the OJC pressings available currently?
Honestly it’s a pretty great recording and it’s going to sound pretty darn good anywhere but just know the new OJC is digitally sourced whereas the 80’s press is not but is much more pricey. Someone here I’m sure can comment on the recent press I would imagine.

I've got the Oscar Peterson Box , Freddie Hubbard , Joe Henderson and maybe one or 2 others from the reissue series, say's they are all done from original tapes, sound pretty good , the occasional warped pressing but nothing too bad .Oh yeah I've got an original Richard Davis LP as well .

Would love to hear if anyone has the recent pressing!

Apparently Michael Fremer gave it a listen. His review is titled "UMe's Birth of the Cool Is A Sonic Abortion And a Reissue Disgrace". :ROFLMAO:

Oh come on. That’s complete bullshit and he’s just being a curmudgeon. I’m 100% fine with them cutting from digital. I thought it sounded quite good all things considered. I’ll have to A/B it against an early pressing I have, but first impressions when I spun it last week were very good. Take his review with a grain of salt I guess.

I've been on the hunt for this as well. Has anyone here got a copy and can agree/disagree with this review?

Edit: Ignore me, I need to learn to scroll before replying. Cheers @mitchwagz
Yeah not sure what the actual source material was for the remaster since Ume is vague but I can’t imagine those tapes or discs or whatever master was used to make the compilation in the first place are in great shape at all. All I know is the proper album sounds good to me haha! The live recording is phenomenal but the sound quality is indeed terrible and never will be good.
