Jazz

this one is really great.

After shipping and exchange, it's a bit more than the one I didn't buy while I was in Ottawa :(

...but I never went to that particular shop, and I dropped $60 on that '84 Japanese pressing of Blowing in From Chicago instead. Which I believe was the better choice - but it was also hard to walk away from the Mingus.

Most of the Wallen Bink 7"singles are £6 each if buying direct.Including the Nathan Davis. Apologies can't remember who was interested in these. They are really well done. (I'd also recommend the recent albums they released, fantastic package and amazing sound.

@Selaws @Portland Sheriff @avecigrec might be of interest.
Thank you. If I knew absolutely there would never be another reissue of Hip Walk, I‘d pick up the 7” For now, as w/ @MikeH, I’m holding out hope for a reissue or getting lucky on a used copy for a reasonable price.

I did pick up one of the three recent Wallen Bink releases (Erich Kleinschuster Sextet ORF Vol 1 w Clifford Jordan & Charles Tolliver). It’s arriving today from Dusty Groove. I’d love all three, but I can’t justify it at $50 a pop plus shipping. And even the $50 option is no longer available bc DG is sold out, and I don’t know any other US outlets that sell Wallen Bink. Buying direct from WB from the US is no better!

Yeah, definitely not cheap importing. It's one of the few that works out much cheaper in the UK. Lets hope Hip Walk is next.

Like Harold Land? His BEST work is on the Hutcherson - Land Blue Notes, his Mainstream titles (stick to OGs) and Topology reissued by BBE.
I picked up Topology when I was in London a few months back. Forget if I grabbed the last copy at BBE or another shop around the corner. That’s a killer album. The price on the Hutcherson-Land BNs has gone up a bunch the past year or so. Hoping they do a TP of some of them. I’ll check out the mainstreams too. Thanks for the recs!

Well, you like Tapscott at least. I don't think I've ever heard anything he's done! For some reason there was just some kind of allure around that set of records.
Sorry - I was being sarcastic bc, although I do like Tapscott, it was an impulse splurge buy for the same reason. Just seemed like something I’d enjoy having in my collection even if it’s a giant pile of solo piano. They came in yesterday, and Nimbus West didn’t disappoint. They said records may be unplayed. I’m pretty sure a few were played, but they’re really clean, and No’s. 6 and 7 were still sealed.

No worries! Sounds like a good haul. Enjoy.

1957, a mammoth year for Mingus, he was on fire - recording sessions for several seminal albums including The Clown, Mingus Three, Tijuana Moods, East Coasting and A Modern Jazz Symposium Of Music And Poetry.

Now, with the support of the Charles Mingus Estate, we are proud to present for the first time, the most expansive LP edition of A Modern Jazz Symposium Of Music And Poetry to date. A wonderful set featuring an all star band alternating throughout of Jimmy Knepper (trombone), Shafi Hadi (tenor and alto sax), Bill Hardman and Clarence Shaw (trumpet), Dannie Richmond (drums), Horace Parlan and Bob Hammer (piano), with narration by the fabulous Mel Stewart.
This is the ultimate edition, including all available outtakes and material related to the session, the recordings have been remastered from the original tape transfers and lacquers cut by Kevin Gray, housed in a gatefold sleeve on reverse-board finish and printed by Pallas.
A stunning album which is sometimes overlooked from the vast Mingus catalogue, however it emanates from one of his most creative periods and today stands out as a sublime conceptual recording.

Grabbed this one from @Plaid Room / Colemine last week. Really great album. Need to build up my Harold Land collection some more. Sleeve has seen better days but the album sounds great
Love this album.

There's a great session co-led by Red Mitchell called 'Hear Ye!!!! Hear Ye!!!!' which is fantastic as well. I also really like the 'Westward Bound!' historic release that Reel to Real put out last year (year before?).

Such an underrated musician imo. Did you get 'Topology' from the BBE J-Jazz series when you went on your recent trip/binge? Another worth listening to.

Edit: just saw that you did get Topology, great stuff! Im going to dig my copy out this weekend to listen to.

I'm going to have to dig those out again. I haven't given Westward Bound much turntable time, I kept passing that and going back to the Roy Brooks Reel to Real release that I picked up at the same time.

I gotta say I found Topology really dull, I’ll have another listen soon, but I was very disappointed with that J-Jazz release.

I should pick up Westward Bound. Keep seeing it for pretty cheap at record shops online! I’ll check out Hear Ye too. Thanks!
