Jazz

Did we know about this?
Been on the cards for a while but I haven't seen it with 7" before, nice find.

Not really sure how I personally feel about this release. The 80's were Davis' pop period (not that im specifically against that, just that he was more revolutionary with his Hard Bop and Cool Jazz) and the fact that its being posthumously finished really excite me to be honest. I will certainly listen to it, but will wait for the prices to drop before I hunt it down.

Out of interest (and I apologise as I know this has been asked before) but hows the 'Complete Birth of the Cool'? Looks like a fantastic collection. I picked up the 'Miles Davis Quintet: Freedom Jazz Dance: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 5' a while back, and while it wont get too much platter time I really enjoyed hearing the conversations between pieces. Does it have these kind of conversations, or is it just various takes of the songs?

Had a listen to bits that were on Spotify and this one didn’t do anything for me unfortunately, shame because I really liked the live one.
Im in a similar position. I enjoyed the couple of tracks that were released early on, but much preferred the live album. I put the order in anyway as there was enough there to grab my attention. I will let you guys know what I think, I picked up a couple of parcels from the post office this morning so hopefully this is one of them

Anyone here have the Speakers Corner edition of Herbie Hancock - Flood? I have already received three warped copies from Amazon. Wondering if I'm just unlucky or if it's a more widespread issue.

The sound quality is amazing though, so at least that isn't the problem.
I mean....not that I want to imply your going to post it......but I would love a copy of this!

Need some advice. New to Jaaz - love Piano Jazz. Deep dived into Bill Evans - I'm a newbie but he's my favorite so far. Any recommendations on a place to go next? I'm checking out Brad Mehldau tonight. There's some good stuff there but it sounds like every album goes in different directions (from my new Jazz gut). Any Brad Mehldau recommendations or some place to turn to next that's a similar vibe to Bill Evans?

I’m still such a newbie to jazz in general compared to others here but these are albums I’ve enjoyed quite a lot with piano frontmen. Bill Evans is my favorite jazz pianist as well!

Ryo Fukui’s - Scenery
Dave Brubeck - Jazz Goes To College (I find thats an easy listen with some awesome Piano solo’s)
Oscar Peterson - Night Train
Vince Guaraldi - Charlie Brown Christmas
Vince Guaraldi - Impressions Of A Black Orpheus
Red Garland - Soul Junction
Duke Ellington and John Coltrane
Thelonious Monk - Monks Dream

I'm a big McCoy Tyner fan. Given your interest in Evans, I think I would recommend some of Tyner's early stuff:

Inception
Nights of Ballads & Blues
Today and Tomorrow
Live at Newport
McCoy Tyner Plays Ellington

For Brad Mehldau, Live in Tokyo (solo) is my favourite of his, and Art of the Trio Vol. 2 and Art of the Trio Vol. 3 are both excellent.

As for piano jazz similar to Bill Evans, as already mentioned Ryo Fukui - Scenery and Oscar Peterson - Night Train are both great.

I'd also recommend Michel Petrucciani as he was heavily influenced by Evans. His album Pianism is probably his best, but he also has a great album with Wayne Shorter, Power of Three.

For a more current player, try Vijay Iyer. In particular, I highly recommend his albums Historicity and Far From Over.

Let us know how the piano jazz rabbit hole goes for you and what you've enjoyed.

Wow, that looks good! Might have to plan a trip to Paris 😁

Thanks guys for the recommendations - a lot to go through :)

I started with Ryo - "Scdenery". This is awesome.

@ghostdorado
@TCell

Any recommendations on a pressing?

The recent one that came out last fall. It was in the VMP store for a while back when they still did the curated store. Tbh, I hadn't heard of Ryo Fukui before that, but it's great. I'm sure you can grab it from Amazon or Bull Moose or whatever online retailer you like if your local doesn't have it.
