Day 16: AOTY

Probably the one album released this year I've listened to the most - but I don't have a lot of actual 2019 releases, a few have already been played here.

Holy Sunday - A slight twist on the theme. There was a great tradition by 50's and early 60's R&B artists of appropriating traditional gospel numbers, which usually pissed off the church. Here's a fine example. Bobby "Blue" Bland's 1962 gem, "Yield Not To Temptation" borrows it's title from an old hymn, but is definitely a love song. It retains that swinging, hand-clapping, call and response church vibe. A totally fantastic tune and a treasured 45 in my collection!

I know I'm a few days late and there was a bit of drama with this day's theme - but Discogs also uses their own defined "Novelty" style of

Novelty Music Description
Comical or nonsensical songs with light, lilting melodies, performed principally for their comical effect and typically telling a brief story. Novelty songs achieved great popularity during the 1920s and 1930s, and had a resurgence of interest in the 1950s and 1960s. Ray Stevens is noted for his novelty songs such as "Guitarzan" and "The Streak".

Humorous songs, or songs containing humorous elements, are not necessarily novelty songs.

I have quite a few Zappa albums that are in the "novelty" style. - I wouldn't call them "Novelty" records I wouldn't be bothered if someone else played Zappa for this days theme.

Day 19: Favourite Instrument

As someone with no amount of playing ability, I don't really have a "favorite" instrument - but I think I have to pick the bass guitar. It's not something you usually hear, but you know when it's missing...like in this perfect example.

Someday I'll A/B this stealth MoFi to the George Marino/Ray Janos cut from the Rhino Box set.

Day 21: Holy Sunday

What Gary (Dream Weaver) Wright says about this album:
Despite the project being instigated by Gary Wright, the album is considered by him to have ended the band's career. The album is described by another as being "one of the great screw-ups in rock history". As Wright describes it, "...we did a project that wasn't our album. It was with this French electronic music composer named Pierre Henry. We just told the label, 'You know this is his album, not our album. We'll play on it just like musicians.' And then when the album was finished, they said, 'Oh no no — it's great. We're gonna release this as your next album.' We said, 'You can't do that. It doesn't have anything to do with the direction of Spooky Two and it will ruin our career.' And that's exactly what happened."Wright left the band following the release of the album.

Day 21: Holy Sunday
Exuma - Exuma

Going a little left field for this one. The persona of Exuma and many of the lyrics on this album are based on the Obeah spiritual traditions he was surrounded by in his time growing up in the Bahamas. He famously said the "'electrical part' of his being 'came from beyond Mars; down to Earth on a lightning bolt'."IMG_20190721_183419.jpg
