Shooter Jennings & Hierophant - Black Ribbons

One thing Shooter sure inherited from his daddy Waylon - balls.

This concept album from 2010 is the soundtrack of the last free radio broadcast in the country. DJ Will O' The Wisp (Stephen King) guides us through the music of Hierophant, the last band the fascist government wants you to hear, before he's taken off the air and taken out. It's a story of government control that hits way too close to home 10 years later.

As for the sound - think Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead find a Pink Floyd record while cleaning out Alan Parsons' garage..

A favorite memory involving this record - I saw Shooter in a club about a year before this record was released. He played the tried and true country stuff he was known for but he also played a bunch of what would become this record. I was totally smitten both listening to this great stuff and watching the reaction of the audience. The Shooter faithful couldn't decide whether they should scrape the cow shit off their boots and throw it or smoke it. Absolutely priceless.

Like I said - balls.

23 - Experimenting

It’s been awhile since I listened to this album and as a recent procurement I was amazed at how different it sounded from what I remembered. I had recalled it being like a b-sides to Laid but it’s way further out there than that. I guess that is bound to happen when you collaborate with Eno.

The Prodigy Experience

Moby credited Experience with changing his perception about dance albums; previously he felt that "dance albums had always failed [...] because they didn't work over the full length of the record. Mostly they were singles collections which was exactly what I didn't want to do," and noted that Experience "impressed me because they'd managed to create a full listening experience which encompassed various styles. This was the kind of vision I had for my [unmade] debut album."

Day 21: HIP HOP

Other than Ice Cube's The Predator, which REALLY needs a reissue, this was the other rap album I played the most in high school.

Various ‎– Judgment Night (Music From The Motion Picture)
Asbestos Records/Epic Soundtrax ‎– ASB113, 1993/2016

#RSD16 - limited to 1700 on red vinyl

Taylor Swift - 1989

While she had made pop country for years, and Red had many songs that were straight up pop, 1989 was when Taylor announced officially that she'd be moving over to the pop realm. Her previous work was great, and that hasn't changed since she's gone pop.

GZA - Liquid Swords

Is this the best Wu-Tang solo album? Is it Cuban Linx? I go back and forth. Usually the best one is the one I'm listening to at that moment. No matter which is best, this one is phenomenal. Great song after great song and the Lone Wolf and Cub samples fit perfectly. This is the Marvel cover, which I'm not the biggest fan of, but it was like $17 so it's the version I have. I do like the sea blue vinyl.

Twas the night before New Years n all through the projects...not a handgun was silent, not even a TEC

Play something relaxing

She & Him - A Very She & Him Christmas

Hey, Christmas music is very relaxing to me. There's a thing called Christmas in July, right? Zooey Deschanel's voice is not quite high not quite low and has a very soothing quality to it. I got this record used for $8 and it shows. The cover is jacked and there's some good pops on Side B. But, so what. I just pretend that's the fireplace crackling on this nice snowy July morning. Muggy....I meant muggy, balmy, clammy, and sweaty July morning. The gender swap in Baby, It's Cold Outside is a nice touch.

Have yourself a merry little Christmas.....no matter what month it is or how the outside world feels like the surface of the sun.........

The Comet Is Coming ‎– Prophecy (Leaf, 2015 First Limited Pressing)

After his time with Melt Yourself Down (which combines jazz and funk) and Sons Of Kemet (jazz with avant-garde hints), in 2015 Shabaka Hutchings teamed up with Dan Leavers and Maxwell Hallett to explore the more psychedelic futuristic sounds. While this has been done before (Sun Ra is perhaps the best example) this was really the first time that Shabaka really delved into these depths with just tenacity. This EP was their first release and really kick-started it all for them.
