June 2020 Record Challenge Thread (The RAFFLE continues!)

第十九天:let's make love tonight

Sunset rollercoaster ~ Cassanova

The Chinese don't call this pregnant rock for nothing. I've never tried ecstasy, after a friend told me it would be the happiest I'll ever be in life and that we should roll before seeing Steve Aoki, I made up my mind right then that if this was the happiest I'll ever be, I'd rather it not be on a substance and as much as I like Steve Aoki, it wouldn't be at his show. Despite hearing otherwise that she overblew the effects I've still stayed away from this substance as psychedelic is more up my alley.

Anyways this group from Taiwan makes music that get you in the mood as they sing those love songs that make everyone want to hug the person next to them

Day 21– Asia, play a record from an artist that hails from Asia

Fumio Itabashi - Watarase (Mule Musiq, 2018 Limited Pressing)

Itabashi is probably my favourite J-Jazz musician and this is my favourite album by him. His raw power cuts perfectly with his more gentle playing and its really an impressive thing to hear. A solo jazz album is always daunting to hear as much of the finer moments tend to come from the collective interpretations and interplay, something you just don't have when there's only one musician. However, on this album Itabashi plays with such skill that you pretty much forget he's on his own. Well worth listening to!

Gorillaz ~ the fall

Not only did you ruin my yearly trip back to China in October you have prevented me from acquiring both d and g sides. Ugh.....Watching my friends in Shanghai live a normal life because of adequate testing and contact tracing makes everyday living in America more miserable. I'm glad I have this community to spin and enjoy music with together as we stay safe and prevent the spread <3

Day 20 - not RSD
Wipers - Youth of America

The special edition of Is This Real? is one of the only things that jumped out at me from the RSD list, but it's been a while since I looked. I'll probably try to grab it online if I can.

Wipers are super underrated and overlooked in my opinion. First three albums are stellar.

第二十一天: 5,000 years of history bro

Chinese football ~ S/T

IMG_20200621_210156.jpg

There's no secret about my love for China, the four years I lived there it was eye opening experience not just from learning a new culture but also being able to have the chance to explore the music scene, it felt like opening a censored book.

I felt so dumbfounded stumbling upon the underground rap, punk, post hardcore scene that I never knew existed. Before moving there I had very limited information about Chinese music only knowing Wang Wen because they had toured previously with mogwai. Then I started seeing flyers about festivals and my notion that this is a closed as I had previously though. From those festivals my knowledge continued to grow and the more I listened the more I felt like China was getting a bad rap and I have tried ever since to try and change that narrative but it's hard when a country has such a detailed history at censoring the media, some fabricated (Winnie the Pooh is not banned in China) and some true.

My selection for today is out of Wuhan, Chinese football, an emo band that was easily relatable. After being exposed to them my tastes expanded and I ended up wondering why so little music came out from this humongous country. Those four years in China turned me off on a lot of American music and some 'Western' music for that matter, because there's so much music in this world that we will be be never be able to listen to all of it, I felt that it's important to be open minded and explore these cultures as much as I could. From then on I've mostly focused on growing my knowledge of bands that hail outside of America and while I certainly miss out on some names I love being able to share names that miss the front page.

(pretty drunk last night, made some edits to make it a tad bit more readable and less harsh sounding lol)

Monday (22) – Your Personal Favorite Genre day

I'm not really sure what my favorite genre is as I really like very many. I also don't think that any kind of music is less valuable/good than others, whatever gives you joy when listening to it is great. 🙂

But I think many records in my collection both on CD and vinyl are from Indie bands. Therefore I play some Indie today.
This is The Spitfires "Year zero", they're a band from the UK who seem to be a bit underrated. Great album. They also use some ska and raggae elements.

Day 22 - favourite genre

Franco et le TP OK Jazz - On Entre OK On Sort KO

Franco is one of the all-time African greats. A Congolese guitarist with dozens of albums, I love his sweet hypnotic style, often with a bit of Latin rumba thrown in. I guess "African" would be my favourite genre even though it's packed full of different genres. Congolese music is different to Ghanaian to Ethiopian to South African to Algerian. What matters is that the music moves me, and this does very much. Also love the album title - which he used a fair bit - "one enters OK, one leaves KO"...

Day 22 - Your Personal Favorite Genre day

Darrell Banks - Here to Stay

I'm a sooooooul maaaan! I guess it would have been more appropriate to post Sam & Dave here but unfortunately that's a glaring hole in my collection. I figured going with another Stax artist would be good enough. Anyway, one of the biggest changes in my taste in music as I've grown older is my obsession with soul music. This is a gem that I'm thankful VMP introduced me to, full of dancefloor burners!

Wednesday (17) – Older Adolescent: Ahh college and the introduction to godspeed, how did your tastes change.

Mos Def - The Ecstatic

I started getting into a lot more rap toward the end of high school and through college. Just picked an album I have released during that time. This one came out right before finals of junior year.

Thursday (18) – Hype up an *artist* that created some art for a band you love.

Vasily Kafanov

mewithoutYou - Brother, Sister

Vasily Kafanov has done the art for all of mewithoutYou's albums since their first LP. [untitled] ep is not pictured due to only have the deluxe vinyl version, but it's similar to the LP version. Bonus print of the Fishtower received directly from the artist. He also did the cover for Smashing Pumpkins - Machina, which is how the band found him.

Saturday (20) – Covid Record Store Day – play an RSD release or an artist that you would’ve supported today
Hooverphonic - Jackie Cane (2002, RSD 2017)

IMG_20200622_112408_437.jpg

In Argentina we don't have a Record Store Day as in the rest of the world. We "celebrate" the Noche De Las Disquerías, which is actually a night when the record stores close really late, like 10 or 12 pm. There are some free concerts and some very cool promotions like if you buy five CDs, you get a 25% off on the sixth CD. You can imagine how great it is.
And the stuff released on RSD we get it if we buy it online. Fortunately, there are not a lot of stuff I really like every year, so it's not like I miss too much.
This is one of my favorite releases on RSD. Hooverphonic is a criminally underrated band from Belgium, and they made this conceptual album about a girl who gets famous, can't stand the fame, goes back home and her twin sister kills her because of jealousy.
