Day 17 - College
By College do you mean University. Remember hearing this band and my mind being blown. Everyone else sitting in the room as if the World hadn’t changed. How wrong of them. Working my way through their past records and waiting for the latest release. Aquemini was the first I heard and I remember Stankonia getting released and my jaw dropping again. Awesome group

Day 17 - Older Adolescent
Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea

I actually had a pretty small interest in finding music that I loved outside of classic rock radio and some punk/ska until I made it to college. But, in college, I spent a lot more time reading music journalism and checking out best of decade lists, which I had never been interested in before. I spent so many hours just sitting at my computer listening to new music from the big shared Entertainment server, limewire, and torrents in college, it really defined my love of music, and seeking out new music for the rest of my life. This is a pretty big stereotypical standout indie music critic favorite, so it felt appropriate. I doubt I'd have heard of it otherwise.

Sunday (21) – Asia, play a record from an artist that hails from Asia

Japanese Breakfast - Soft Sounds From Another Planet

Despite the name of her project, Michelle Zauner of Japanese Breakfast was actually born in South Korea. This album is very good, blending lo-fi elements with some good old fashioned pop.

Day 18 - Art!
Lightning Bolt - Sonic Citadel

As far as I know, the drummer, Brian Chippendale, has done all of the art for Lightning Bolt's albums. This album renewed my interest in them and led to me picking up my favorite back catalogue albums as well. I think the art on this one is my favorite of his.

Radiohead ~ hail to the theif

IMG_20200621_120624.jpg

I went from rap, to emo/screamo/post hardcore to prog and post rock and finally when I entered university I had some friends introduce me to some cool indie rock bands like yo la tengo, beta band and so on. However radiohead I hated them, I thought they were shit.

Until one day when my buddy was like hey I got some acid wanna try it? I had grown shrooms previously and psychedelics were my favorite but hadn't tried LSD yet, so I said sure the set and setting was right and so we tripped. Half way in he said let's play some radiohead and I was a bit scared the music would throw me off since I hadn't previously like them, but he put on in rainbows and we sat and we listened. By god was it the most beautiful thing I ever heard I felt like I finally got radiohead so to confirm it we put hail to the theif on next and the joy continued a complete different vibe from in rainbows but the things I saw I'll never forget. Now radiohead is up there with some of my all time favorites

Day 19 - Love Everyone
Bob Marley - Exodus

Never had a personal ecstasy experience. Had a hard time picking an album that makes me love everybody otherwise, my first couple thoughts were taken or recently picked. Bob sure could write a good love everybody song, though, like the last song on this album.

Otoboke Beaver - Itekoma Hits

I had a few different directions I could have gone with this one, lots of interesting and diverse music from the Far East that I have only recently began exploring. Decided to go with the bullet train of raw energy that is Otoboke Beaver. They remind me a bit of The Blood Brothers if the Blood Brothers wore cute, colorful dresses and shouted in Japanese.

Lyrics Born “Later That Day...”

Formally known as Asia Born this Japanese-American emcee is one half of Latryx and a member of the Solesides crew out of the Bay Area!! I just realized I may have wrote word for word what his Wikipedia entry is, it’s already been a long hot day!

Day 21 - Asia

Masumi Hara - 4 X A Dream

Lots of great Japanese music being reissued in the US these days, which is a very welcome development. Here’s a recent favorite. Not sure what the title means, but it’d make a good name for a future Musk-Grimes child.

Hemlock Ernst and Kenny Segal ~ Back at the house

IMG_20200621_145218.jpg

I went back and forth on this one, do I hype Charlie Wagner who did a bunch of work with mewithoutYou, or maybe Esao Andrews who did a bunch of art for Circa Survive.

But ended up wanting to hype up my highschool buddy Eric Dyer, who had the chance to do the cover art for this fantastic album. If you have the time please check out his website and support him if you can and like the work he does.
