June 2020 Record Challenge Thread (The RAFFLE continues!)

Day 26 – Acid - Let’s go on a Psychedelic Journey

Kikagaku Moyo ‎– House In The Tall Grass (Guruguru Brain, 2019 VMP Pressing on Clear / Silver Split Vinyl)

This is a great example of an album which I never would have heard had it not been for VMP releasing this exclusive pressing. Its not really like any other music I own (other than the other 2 released at the same time) but I really dig it and it certainly has that psychedelic feel to it.

This was my other option for Acid/Psychedelic day - glad to see it posted. When I saw Earthless last, Kikagaku Moyo opened up. Wasn't familiar with them at all but immediately got a Grateful Dead vibe from them. Made for an excellent show with the two of them.

Day 25: Record label

Nap Eyes - I'm Bad Now

Nap Eyes' first three records, this being the third, were released in their native Canada by You've Changed Records, co-founded about a decade ago by recent favourite Daniel Romano, Ian Kehoe of Attack in Black, and Steven Lambke of the post-punk legends Constantines. I had pre-ordered this pink copy from the label's site and it arrived with a small chip on the outer rim of the disc. Someone from the label hand-delivered a replacement to my door the next day! They release a bunch of great Canadian artists, including Job McKiel who put out one of my favourite records so far of 2020, Bobby Joe Hope. Very reasonable prices and a local touch. Gotta love that.

Catch-up almost done...

DAY 25 - RECORD LABEL HYPE

IMG_20200626_220904.jpg

I held off on this one from the local hype day, though I could have used it. Their singer lives a town over from me (super nice person!) and this album was co-produced by my buddy Peter.
But Polyvinyl Records continues to amaze me with the quality of their roster. Some of my most listened to albums of the last 5 years are from their label: Rainer Maria, White Reaper, Of Montreal, Alvvays, Palehound, Fred Thomas, Japandroids, Get Up Kids... And, in case you didn't know, HUM are putting out their first album in 22 years with this label. Astounding roster.

DAY 26 - PSYCH

Do I need to explain this one?

Day 27: It's a bit dusty in here...

It doesn't make me cry as often as the first two weeks/months this album came out...but every now and again it hits me just right to trigger the waterworks.

Day 27 - National Onion Day, play an album that makes you cry

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings - Soul of a Woman

This album was written and recorded when Sharon was undergoing cancer treatments, but the album wasn't released until after her death. Even though she was going through so much she was still able to bring that fire throughout the whole album, but listening to the closer, Call on God, get's me every time. I just can't help but picture her sensing her time was coming to an end and putting things in God's hands.

Day 25 - Check the Label and Say it Loud

The Whitefield Brothers "In the Raw" (Soul Fire records)
Various 45's on the might Soul Fire label!

Nothing like shining a light on a label no longer in business!!! I went to a hear Philippe Lehman DJ at some club in Toronto at the "height" of Soul Fire records and it was one of the most fun nights I've ever had!! The music was amazing, the atmosphere was electric and it seemed like everyone was on the same wavelength the entire night! After the set we were just hanging around chatting with him and he was handing out 45's to everyone because he was so proud of the music and wanted everyone to hear it! It was a fantastic evening to say the least!

More, from discogs:

After the demise of funk revival pioneer label Desco Records, founders Philippe Lehman and Gabriel Roth parted ways. While Roth started Daptone Records, featuring a cleaner soulful sound, Lehman created Soul Fire Records to feature a dirtier raw funk sound. Soul Fire has reissued quality rare funk records, but these reissues have received limited print runs making them collectable as well. Soul Fire has also produced new funk artists recorded in that old authentic way. The record label ceased its activities near the end of 2003. Lehman moved on to Truth & Soultaking a batch of artists to the new company.
Compilations of the majority of the label's output were released in 2013 on Truth & Soul. See the vinyl-box comp. visible on this label-page and the (T&S-only) 2xCD-compilation The Soul Fire Box Set (Rare Sides From The Soul Fire Catalogue) which does offer additional selections.

P.S. - Truth and Soul is a dope label as well!! Also don't sleep on Desco... actually do sleep on Desco, just buy the records if you see them and forward them to me, it'll take care of them for you!!
