Jóhann Jóhannsson - Drone Mass

Still thinking of musicians who we lost too soon, on the classical side Jóhann Jóhannsson passed away in 2018, and this was one of his last compositions, for voices, strings, and electronics.

I'm still so sad that we lost him. I can listen to Fordlandia over and over and over again and never get bored. Brilliant composer.

Ah, here we go...!

Kendrick Lamar
is renowned for his impactful contributions to the hip-hop genre, earning fame through his exceptional lyricism, storytelling, and social commentary. His innovative and thought-provoking albums, such as "good kid, m.A.A.d city" and "To Pimp a Butterfly," showcase his ability to address complex societal issues, making him a voice for the marginalized. Lamar's legacy is marked by his influence on the evolution of rap, seamlessly blending conscious rap with mainstream appeal. Notable accolades include multiple Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer Prize for Music, and widespread acclaim for his ability to consistently push artistic boundaries while remaining socially relevant.

For the past ten yers Kendrick has taken the rap and hip hop game by storm. Today, spin something that pays homage to Kendrick - whether it be Kendrick himself, other rap/hip hop artists, or another young new artist who has jumped to the top of their genre over the last decade.

This album features a collective of artists known as the West Coast Get Down that command respect, and contributed quite a bit of instrumentation to To Pimp A Butterfly. And are all musicians who have jumped to the top of their genre over the last decade for sure.

I hope this isn't Dr. Dre's final opus, but it might end up being so. He may have unofficially pased the torch to the younger guys on this one. Kendrick spits lots of fire, and everything about it is great.

I've still never listened to this! Gonna go fix that right now before I fire up the turntable...

This one's a twofer, since I think Janelle Monáe has had a similar trajectory to Kendrick over the past few years - two of the hottest young industry titans doing great things. ALSO, Kung-Fu Kenny pops in and drops a guest verse on the remix of Jidenna's eternal fire track "Classic Man" - good shit!
