🍾Don’t demand respect, command it.

Aretha Franklin - Aretha’s Greatest Hits

Aretha had started out her time at Atlantic Records merely asking for your Respect, but by the time this greatest hits comp had come out just 4 years later (not to mention the rest of her career), the Queen of Soul commanded it!

January 12: Patti Smith

IMG_9276.jpg

Patti Smith is celebrated for her revolutionary contributions to the punk rock movement in the 1970s, blending poetry with music in a unique and influential way. Her distinctive vocal style and powerful stage presence have captivated audiences, earning her a reputation as the "punk poet laureate." Beyond her musical prowess, Smith's socially conscious lyrics and fearless approach to self-expression resonated with a generation seeking authenticity and rebellion. Her legacy endures not only for her iconic albums like "Horses" but also for inspiring subsequent generations of artists to embrace individuality and challenge conventional norms in the world of music.

To be honest, I am the least familiar with Patti Smith out of all of the oracles thus far. That will change today! That being said, consider playing an album today either by Patti Smith, reflecting her influence, OR explore music by an artist you're less acquainted with but eager to discover.

X - Los Angeles

A band I don’t know much about. Furthermore a band most definitely influenced by Patti Smith. In fact John Doe was inspired to start a punk band after hearing Horses.

As for enthusiasm towards the band, some of you may know that I started this thread:

Because I felt like I didn’t know enough about punk and chose the RS list of the greatest punk albums to explore the genre (and its offshoots) which is how I came to hear this album which led to me purchasing a copy! Which reminds me I should finish listening to the rest of the albums on that list:

January 12: Patti Smith

Going with an album that features Bruce's version of Because The Night as I don't have any Patti on vinyl. Plus its just a great collection of live tracks.

However, she did play this when I saw her back in 2015 when she put on a very impassioned performance. And a cllp of this song happens to be the only video that I can find on Youtube of that night.

Patti Smith co-wrote a small handful of BÖC songs during their first decade. And in the case of "The Revenge Of Vera Gemini," found here on Agents of Fortune, she even sang with them! Closing song "Debbie Denise" is a Patti Smith co-write too.
