Let's See What Makes Your Vinyl Spin!

I don't have any point of comparison, but you can hear the difference between a standard CD and SACD and they both sound wonderful. That said, if I had to do it all over again I would have probably tried to find something a little newer, this one is lacking a few inputs/outputs that would have been handy, not a deal breaker by any means, but it looks like the UD7007 has all that you might need. I paid $300ish for the UD5007, if you can find a good deal on the 7007 I think you'll be happy with it. A universal BR player is a very viable option for filling the SACD hole in a system.

I still stand by the choice, does it sound better than a dedicated SASD player?? I don't know to be honest, and don't care, this sounds fantastic and its hard to argue the cost savings over a SACD player. ;)

For sure. SACDs are better using the same DAC. Even on my old Sony they did. The complication was when I got the PS audio DAC and the player could output CDs to it but not SACDs. All of a sudden CDs sounded better because the DAC was that much better.

The reason for a BR universal is actually that they output the DSD via HDMI and I can adapt that to play the SACD layer through the PS Audio DAC. So I wouldn’t be using the internal DAC in the BR at all. That has me wondering if I actually need a big old fancy marantz at all or if just a standard old Sony one will do because it’s only really spinning the discs, my existing DAC will be doing the leg work.

Or should I cut my losses with CDs and SACDs altogether seeing as I rarely reach for them?

I’ll have to have a bit of a think and a browse.

That my friend is a choice, but I think cost has a lot to do with it too. I was ok with $300 to open up that part of my collection and add an SACD playback source. I went back and forth for a while, I'm sure you'll figure it out.

That said, the lack of being able to run an external DAC off the 5007 is exactly the connections short coming I was referring to.........again, not a deal breaker for the amount of use it gets.

In all honesty getting the DSD layer of an SACD out and having a DAC be able to use it is such a kerfuffle that unless already have a piece of gear that can use it and will Jerry rig or you’re willing to pay fortunes it’s just not worth it.

You could actually use that with a DAC that accepts PS Audio spec I2S over HDMI and a HDMI to I2S converter, which is what I will be doing if I get one, but it might not be worth the hassle and expense for you with not already having that in your system.

Just bought one of those new-design Dual CS 429 automatic turntables. I am getting on in my years and really appreciate the auto start and stop function. Takes the stress out of listening, especially now that I don't have to jump out of my easy chair to lift the tonearm at the end of the album. Dual did a really nice job with the mechanism on this model. I remember the old 1960s and 1970s automatic turntables and they made a racket like a vending machine. The Dual is virtually silent in the automatic start and stop function. Another nice touch is the tone arm is isolated from the plinth which make for very good tracking and less vibration. I did replace the Ortofon 2M Red with a Sumiko Amethyst. Not that there was anything wrong with the Red, it's just that I had the Amethyst from my other turntable and it sounds amazing. Phono preamp is the legendary Darlington MM6. Amplification via Black Ice Audio Fusion Integrated 3502S running all NOS tubes. Speakers are Klipsch. Happy listening!408BE0A1-D381-4A39-9FDA-DD41C4AFE0B8_1_201_a.jpeg

@MongoLike you just took me back to the '60s with your analogy of vending machines and automatic turntables. :)

Nice looking setup. Those Klipsch rock.
I enjoy the fully auto TT also. Makes life easy when you are spinning.
My amp has auto off too. Gotta admit I doze off sometimes and it's nice to wake up to everything shut down.

That looks very smart. Upgradeable decks are a blessing and a curse to be honest. Vertere got in touch asking if I wanted to 'try' the Imperium PSU with MG-1 (it's designed for the bigger decks but works on mine too). I declined because I'll only do something stupid 🥴.

What a knob though...

I'll save you all the trouble of looking.
About $14,000.

Lovely! What’s the worst that could happen…

Still lots to do on my deck over time, that indeed is the blessing / curse of the LP12 as you say. But for me it makes high end more accessible as you can build over time. £3k here, £3k there etc.

Kore subchassis and new tonearm the next targets for early next year I think.

We have established that, with my legendarily poor impulse control, very bad things could happen 🤡.

What PSU were you using before the Radikal?
A Hercules 2. I had it fitted when I got the deck 3 years ago as the standard linn majik power supply has no 45 mode without messing with an adapter which is a massive pain. It does a decent enough job given it’s only a couple of hundred £!

I imagine the Radikal will be a fair old step forward. Did you decide on PSU over arm by listening or was it a price/availability thing?

Linn hierarchy is bearing, power supply, sub chassis, then arm / cart. A good deal came up on a 2020 radikal at my dealer, and I couldn’t get the new karousel bearing without changing my psu as the Hercules 2 positioning doesn’t allow for the new bigger bearing. So it opened up the opportunity to tick off the two most important elements for progression and takes the psu above the Akurate spec dec.

I’ll do the Kore early next year to get the sub chassis to Akurate spec, and then also look at a new arm in either an audio origami or an older linn ekos. I’ll keep with the Adikt cart due to toddlers potentially causing chaos. £300 for a stylus is enough without having to worry about changing a £1-2k MC cart if the deck gets knocked or fiddled with!
