March 4: Play something that that surprised you. Either you really liked it or really hated it.

My first month of VMP was for the Nils Frahm - Spaces release. From then, Dec 2015 to this release in Nov 2016 I had no problems with any of the releases. Some weren't great, but I was more indifferent to them than a total dislike.

I have attempted to listen to this a few times, thinking I must have been in a bad mood, or just wasn't the music for that time I was playing it. But no. I do in fact hate it. It really is just an annoying sounding album that I want to turn off. I'll put it on every so often to see if it ever clicks.

LOL, differemt strokes, I love this album. I enjoy their first album, Thought For Food a bit more but this was one of the LPs that was originally convinced me to sign up for VMP.

Charles Bradley "Black Velvet"

While this is actually just one album stretched on 2 records, it is indeed a nicely done box by VMP. It contains a slipmat and a great booklet. The album itself is beautiful. I've got it as a swap and am very glad I've picked it up.

March 4: Surprise

Nils Frahm - Spaces

I joined VMP in the fall of 2017 when a good friend of mine got me a three-month gift subscription as thanks for playing guitar at his wedding. At the time (and maybe still, I'm not sure), gift subscriptions also included two extra records, that were sent to you right away. For me, and I'm sure many others at the time, these records were the Books' The Lemon of Pink and Nils Frahm's Spaces. I'm sure these were two of their most swapped records so they had a bunch of leftovers at their warehouse and were trying to get rid of them, though I didn't know about swaps at the time. I didn't listen to either for quite a while, and though I like the Books record, the Nils Frahm album really blew me away. Last.fm tells me it's my most spun VMP record and it even climbed pretty high on my best-of-the-decade list. The first time I listened to it my girlfriend was with me and she also remarked how beautiful it was, and a year or two later we got the chance to see him live here in Toronto. It was a wonderful experience and I'd recommend it to anyone.

The Beta Band - The Three EP's boxset

Edit: 🤔, I just realized it says "1 album from a boxset", soooooo this one doesn't count as it's an EP boxset?
I'll probably pick some other boxset for a do over.

I don't exactly own many box sets, so good old reliable Amy WInehouse will strike again. With that said, It's a perfect opportunity to get them all cleaned and play this one which is one of the few I haven't spun yet and, apparently, is really good.

Caroline Rose - Superstar

This was a VMP Essentials album last year. I rolled my eyes at the thought of an unreleased album in a track deemed "Essential Records". But, as I am lazy and forgetful, I didn't swap. I'm so happy I didn't, because this album made it's way into my Top 10 of last year. Great album, great production, great pressing. I still don't think it belonged in the Essentials Track, but that's another conversation.

Bob Dylan - The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan

From the Original Mono Recording Box Set. What can I say that hasn't been said a million times over about this album or Dylan himself? It's my favorite Dylan album from start to finish and has my favorite Dylan song on it; Don't Think Twice, It's Alright. The cover was also used in one of the most memorable scenes in the film Vanilla Sky.

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world

That part right there resounds with me more now than ever and I fucking hate it.

David Bowie "Stage (2017)" (1978 RCA; 2017 expanded Parlophone reissue, from A New Career In A New Town box set)

This has become the definitive version of Stage for me. Love how this feels more like a full show compared to the original.

This was my most recent box set and while it’s an excellent release, it sounds fantastic. The recording is of a grungy 3 set live show from the early 1990s at a small venue in Santa Cruz; the box itself is pretty bare bones. Only the discs, an info sheet, and a download card but when the music is this good the other stuff doesn’t matter nearly as much.

Novos Baianos - Acabou Chorare

Before hearing this record, I think the only “Brazilian” music I was really a fan of were some songs off Beck’s Mutations. This opened a new door for me.

Maybe not technically a box set, but it is a deluxe edition with a lot of goodies.

Hate is probably too strong, but I just can’t get into this record. I liked the self titled album that preceded this one so I figured I’d be into this one as well. Maybe this one makes it to the PIF thread.
