March 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge Thread - Here It Goes Again

HOW'D THAT GET THERE?
This is a day for the forgotten corners of your collection that even the dust doesn't know is there. Dig deep and see if you can find something you didn't even know you had or that you don't remember buying.

This one hasn't hit the table in decades.

A 1985 one hit wonder that didn't deserve to be. Finely crafted songs rich in viviid imagery and storytelling.

Everybody sing along...

Truncated video version omitting the death...

Complete LP version...

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
Give shine to the women in your collection! Bonus points for playing an album by a band with all female members.

I played Philosophy Of The World last year for this theme, so here's their other album....and I'm going for the bonus points.

This is mostly from a 1975 recording session.

I have absolutely no idea how this got in my collection, I suspect my Bro is to blame as we are always playing this type of trick on each other, he often borrows a few records and brings them back in a few weeks, I suspect he picked this up at a charity shop and added it to my collection to see how long it would take me to find it
I cleaned it last night and played it, Sorry ABBA I didn't get past track 2 ...now to get it back to its rightful owner some planning is needed, the record may find its way into a sleeve of one that he does want to borrow

Apparently I bought this back during the frequent Target B2G1 sales in 2020. I must've only spun this once prior, I can't remember why I sprung for this initially.

just listening to this for the first time, not sure if its the greatest or worst thing I have listened to, its glorious (I got a lot further than I did with the ABBA record to be fair)

EDIT-- just listened to the debut record, that takes it to another level I can't stop listening to it bloody hell....

Don’t remember when I bought it. Don’t remember where I got it. Still sounds pretty good.

They really are something.

I do recommend finding a copy of Philosophy Of The World over Shaggs’ Own Thing, but I know PotW is sold out on LITA website and SOT is not. The LITA reissue may be something to get elsewhere if you can find it, they did a good job with those.

DARE TO BE STUPID
Play something by an artist that has been parodied by the great "Weird Al" Yankovic.

Devo hasn't been directly parodied in a song, but the track "Dare To Be Stupid" was heavily influenced in the style of Devo....down to wearing the yellow jumpsuits.

It seems any of the videos have been pulled from youtube, so I can't provide it.

Devo – Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!
Virgin – V2106, 1978

UK pressing - vinyl is grey, but I think it's supposed to be a purple-ish...at least grey isn't listed as a possible color on the hype sticker.

A literal "How'd that get there?".

Garage sales can be wonderful things. Take for example the excitement of finding a copy of Neil Young ~ After the Gold Rush for $1. Take a quick peek at the record, and it's in good shape, no scratches - but you don't look at the label.

But then imagine the surprise of getting home, putting it on the turntable and having this come out of the speakers. IMO someone got a good upgrade when they bought the Helen Reddy record.

So my strategy for this one is to hit random on the Discogs list til I get to something that fits. And we got it. I remember buying it - I think - it was one of those $4 deep discount throw ins. This was a double doozy as it forced me to find the other parts where the whole package would've been cheaper to get together and I don't think I've spun it. Funny enough, I really dug it. Go figure.

The Jazz Butcher "Scandal In Bohemia" (1984 Glass Records, original UK pressing)
Pulled this out of my storage boxes in the closet. Forgot I had this great 80's "left of the dial" record. Pressing sounds fantastic too. Moving this back to my shelves after this spin.

There's a few VMP-era FOMO releases that I could have used, as there are a few that I have no memory of. But I'm going with this one. I don't know when or where I bought it. I'm sure I picked it up solely based on the label that released it. I added it to my Discogs 11 years ago, so it could have been a record store or Goodwill, as I was still hitting both at that time.

Albert Hammond - It Never Rains in Southern California

Pretty sure this one came from a batch of my parents' records years ago. I have it stashed in the storage under our window seat. I converted it to record storage a couple years ago: X-mas records, stuff that is in bad shape, stuff I rarely listen to.

Here's something I didn't know
On the song Creep, Radiohead took elements from the 1974 song "The Air That I Breathe"; following legal action, Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood are credited as cowriters

I have a crate of records like this hidden in my closet to free up space on my shelves. From the look of the price tag on this, it looks like I probably picked it up at the record store where I worked in 2006. I doubt they made me pay the 25¢ for it.

Modest Mouse - Good News for People Who Love Bad News

I guess they don't technically count as parodies, but I always got a kick out of his polka medleys. One of them includes "Float On."
