March 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge Thread - Here It Goes Again

MARCH 16
LOVE STINKS
Play a break-up album or one with songs about heartbreak.

Unintentionally closing out the trilogy with this one, since Kanye famously almost stage crashed Beck as well.

"… It's only lies that I'm living
It's only tears that I'm crying
It's only you that I'm losing
Guess I'm doing fine"

Beck ~ Sea Change

This is one of the albums I had in mind when I made this theme. As was Here, My Dear which @Turbo took care of.

And the record before it, Florence's HBHBHB, was sort of spurred on by...Taylor Swift

That was a great article on Florence and her performance style. Since we are taking tangents today, I'm gonna take a side trip to 2014. Went up to San Francisco for Neil Youngs Bridge Benefit, primarily for Neil Young, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. Florence & The Machine absolutely stole the show. Just Florence and 2 acoustic musicians, her voice brought the 20k plus at the Shoreline Amphitheater to near silence. One of my top concert moments for sure.

If you have a few minutes to spare, check this out:

Lorde - Melodrama

According to everyone's favorite Wikipedia: Initially inspired by her disillusionment with fame, she wrote Melodrama to capture heartbreak and solitude after her first breakup.

NO SHAME DAY
Play an album in your collection that you love wholeheartedly - even if you might tell others it's just a guilty pleasure.

Online reviews mostly pan this album but, I love it.

Howlin' Wolf - The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions

That performance really is a perfect encapsulation of how uniquely talented she is. Thinking a lot about the 2010s, there's so much music that for most artists it's really east to find comparable artists or bands. I can't think of a single current singer who can do what Florence Welch does when you combine the vocals, delivery, and music. Not making any case for greater than/less than but she's an absolute marvel.

(That held note at 10:45 is just absolutely insane after the prior 10 minutes of performing)

I love her so much. I saw Florence and the Machine at a small club in SF called Mezzanine and knew right away she was going to be huge.

This is my favorite performance of my personal favorite song.

THE LOUDNESS WAR RAGES ON
Rick Rubin turned 59 today on Thursday! Honor the legendary producer by playing something that he produced. (Or something else that's bound to shatter some eardrums).

Going with a CD, RR produced and loud!

Danzig - Danzig II: Lucifuge

Day 16: LOVE STINKS

Pretty much every Reigning Sound album is a break up album. Either someone broke Greg Cartwright's heart really bad, or everyone does.
I'd love to spin their debut Break Up...Break Down but I haven't found it on vinyl yet.

So I'll go with Love and Curses, it certainly features some heartache.
