March 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge Thread - Here It Goes Again

MARCH 26
RIP TAYLOR HAWKINS
Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins has sadly passed away at the young age of 50. Deciding at the last second to change this theme to honor the musician. You can either play something that Hawkins was featured on, or just an album with great drumming in general.

The Police "Synchronicity" (1983 A&M; 2018 A&M remaster, from Every Move You Make set)
Selected this as a bit of a double tribute, as I see that Taylor Hawkins played in a Police cover band. Plus Stewart Copeland is a great drummer.

Can - Tago Mago

A quintessential piece of kraturock paired with a stellar, creative drumming performance from Jaki Liebezeit.

I guess Phil was among Taylor's favorite drummers

Peter Gabriel - So

The first thing you hear when dropping the needle on So is Stewart Copeland's work on the hi hat, and Manu Katché appears on many of the album tracks. Just a fantastic drums album, RIP Taylor!

Day 26: RIP Taylor Hawkins

I still haven’t really dived into the Foo Fighters’ work aside from a few songs, but I found something in my Dad’s collection (which I gave him as a birthday present years ago) that fits both themes perfectly!

Rush - 2112 (40th Anniversary)

23064721-C92C-4F35-BEE1-5C6FD9A5DDD6.jpeg

featuring Neil Peart’s untouchable drumming on the original album and a bonus LP of their performance at Massey Hall, as well as another side that features other artists performing songs from the album, including “Overture” by Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins & Nick Raskulinecz!

I’ve got no Foo Fighters to use in this tribute, but I have lots of Art Blakey, a true icon of the drumming profession.

Dennis Wilson - Pacific Ocean Blue

The 30th anniversary reissue of Pacific Ocean Blue reissue inclused the song "Holy Man", recorded for Pacific Ocean Blue in 1977, in two versions. Wilson had completed work on the instrumental backing track but never finished a satisfactory vocal, erasing an original attempt. For the reissue, Hawkins was recruited to record a vocal version in Wilson's style given their similarities. The song's original lyricist, Gregg Jakobson, was tapped to help recall the song's original melody and to write lyrics for the song. Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor also recorded backing vocals for the track, along with guitar by May.

Orion Sun – Hold Space For Me

This is was the first new musical discovery I made the week I got laid off and was suddenly at home with headphones and music all day so as not to be listening to my wife's confidential work calls. I streamed the hell out of this until I eventually got my copy from VMP after immediately purchasing their store drop. I still absolutely love this, though I don't play it multiple times daily anymore like I did for the first month or two of the pandemic.

Foo Fighters - The Colour And The Shape

Taylor Hawkins was hired right after the recording of this record was completed but he was in the Everlong video, which is one of my favorite videos ever (directed by Michel Gondry). The part where the bed suddenly transforms into a drum kit is just brilliant.

Wasting Light ~ Foo Fighters

To say this album means a lot to me is to say I’m Pirate! All joking aside I’m in so much pain…. I had so much to do today and I am glad I was distracted all day. I am sure like a Chris Cornell I’ll be missing this dude every day….. Walk was a song of healing for me when I kicked my toxic ex out of my life.

I have my nice headphones that y’all here suggested. It flavors the bottom end. I’m writing this as side 1 is kicking into gear….. I’m gonna close my eyes and be immersed in some of the best drumming ever.

RIP Taylor you were one of a kind….

Strapping Young Lad - Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing
Screenshot_20220326-214837.jpg

Spent the evening listening to the Foo's new death metal album and the drums are like machine guns. So figured I'd play something in that vein to burn the candle for Taylor. I never saw him live with FF, but caught him playing with Alanis a couple times.

BLAST TO THE PAST

Ghost - Impera

So this new Ghost album is straight up 80’s arena rock with an occult leaning. I hated it at first, but it’s been growing on me with each listen. Its catchy as hell, but I do miss the blatant Satan worshipping and spooky atmosphere from their earlier albums, although there are still hints of it. However, I am finding more and more to like, especially as I dig in more to the lyrics and themes.

DAVID LYNCH DAY
45 years ago today, David Lynch's debut film Eraserhead hit theaters. Play something surreal or experimental.

Going with some low hanging fruit since I'm so behind...

David Lynch & Alan R. Splet – Eraserhead (Original Soundtrack Recording)
Sacred Bones Records – SBR-3008-3, 1982/2017

Limited Deluxe Edition of 1000 on silver vinyl with bonus 7"

Cut at Bonati Mastering (only the 7")
Pressed at GZ

As for the movie...I highly recommend the Criterion Blu Ray. It has some great extras...like Lynch's short films.

I haven't listened to any of their earlier stuff, but was very surprised by how much of a late 80s Blue Öyster Cult vibe I got from most of this album.
