DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER

The Seatbelts - Cowboy Bebop (Original Series Soundtrack)

Lately, it seems like when OSTs from anime, video games, movies, and other forms of art are reissued on vinyl through Mondo, Milan, and other labels, the reissued artwork is done by fans. In the case with Cowboy Bebop, I'm not too much a fan of the redone album artwork. Original (iconic) artwork of the first volume is below.

Play a great album with a not-so-great album cover.

The album is Ugly and the LP jacket is in line. I think that may actually make it a great album cover based on the title but there's not enough Screaming Females shared here so I'm calling the shots on this one and saying it's not so great so I can play this one.

I was part of a crew that recorded every set by every band at Hopscotch for a few years. I shot the Screaming Females clip below at my first Hopscotch in 2012. Was running audio, had a camera clamped to my mic stand about 7 feet up and was attempting to make it interesting with some zooms and pans in lieu of a static shot. In some spots, the camera work is a little clunky.

Oh yeah, I forgot one more detail - I was totally drunk.

They were totally dynamite...

After the show, Marissa and King Mike added their own artwork to my LP...

This is a tough one because a lot are really good, and of the ones that aren't, I try not to judge them too hard if they're smaller artists or it's like...a forced label compilation situation, or if it's a kids album with different sensitivities. With that said, I thought this was an immediately identifiable and appropriate album cover for the standard version (which was played yesterday by @Wicked Dreamer ) and I had been holding out for the deluxe only to see this cover. Dua's still Dua but...may as well put three wolves on it at this point. It feels like a bad photoshop (kind of like Club Future Nostalgia which is another mess IMO). Add in the Daft Punk knockoff text for her name and the white-on-moon color of the song list on the back and it's a mess. I still have it and the music is still full of pop gold but it stings a tiny bit every time I see the standard sleeve.

There's a lot to love about the Truckers debut album (Living Bubba, 18 Wheels of Love, Steve McQueen, Buttholeville!), but the album art is definitely not one of those things. Things improved considerably when Wes Freed came on board for the album art.

Day 7: DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER

I don’t have any outwardly bad album covers in my collection (or any that I think are outwardly bad) so I just went with this:

Fiona Apple - When the Pawn Hits the Conflicts He Thinks Like a King What He Knows Throws the Blows When He Goes to the Fight and He’ll Win the Whole Thing When He Enters the Ring There's No Body to Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand and Remember That Depth Is the Greatest of Heights and If You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where to Land and If You Fall It Won't Matter, Cuz You'll Know That You're Right

I know most people don’t use the full title most of the time but I don’t know why they felt the need to shorten it like this.

I kinda hate the frog imagery they decided to go with here instead of some more iconic imagery from the film (hell, I love the og movie poster) Amazing songs though!

GENRE ROULETTE
Play an album that is impossible to categorize under a single genre.

Amythyst Kiah - Wary + Strange

Maybe not impossible to categorize, but when I first listened to this I knew I'd look forward to a lot of listens because she really explores some different styles on this record.

I guess the Discogs listing agrees:
Genre:Rock, Blues, Folk, World, & Country

THE 90S CALLED, THEY WANT THEIR ALBUM BACK
Play an album that you feel is quintessentially 90s.

So very 90s. I listened to this on CD a zillion times. The first song I heard was PM Dawn's version of You Got Me Floatin' and could NOT stop playing that track. And it's definitely a solidly 90s lineup.
I could have used for the Sunday Funday prompt, it's a fun listen.

DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER
Play a great album with a not-so-great album cover.

I judge a lot of albums by their cover. I'll occasionally buy an album from a band I don't know just cause the cover looks like something I'd dig, and conversely, I'll not buy an album by a band I know sometimes if the cover looks like shit. I won't let an ugly cover stop me if the music is good, but if I don't know the tunes it can make or break it.

I think this cover looks terrible and I never would have grabbed this, since this is my first listen, if some on here wouldn't have talked it up. That said, it's ok so far. Not something I think I'll love, but I can see the appeal it would have, especially as a winding down album with bowl after a long day.

Edit: The B side is doing it for me more than the A side was.
