May 2020 Record Challenge Thread (PRIZE RAFFLE AT THE END!)

Day 4: An album from your senior year of high school

My senior year was 1994/1995, I was probably mostly listening to stuff from earlier in 1994, The Downward Spiral and Ill Communication were in my car stereo all the time....this area of West Central Illinois was a bit slow in getting things...like music, clothes....they just seemed to lag a good 6 months behind the rest of the world.

This album came out early in the school year, and I remember that I had to order it (on CD, although the vinyl had been released 2 months earlier, I had no TT at the time...that would change soon, tho.) because the local Musicland/Sam Goody in the mall wouldn't have carried it on their own.

Have you heard any of Jim Steinman's solo albums? Sound just like Bat Out Of Hell - 1 and 2.

Some of the songs on his album Bad For Good eventually made it to BOOH 2. Meatloaf has actually covered most of the tracks on that album between BOOH 2 and 3

Indeed I have. Enjoyable album, Bad For Good. I love Steinman, think he’s really underrated. He has 2 great tracks on the Streets Of Fire soundtrack which are great if you love big hair and power balladry. Who doesn’t?

I also like the Pandora’s Box album he did with all female vocalists. The original It’s All Coming Back To Me Now is on it. Well worth a listen.

Damn I love Streets of Fire.

Day 6 - Bargain Bin

Amazing Rhythm Aces - Too Stuffed to Jump

These guys are truly amazing. I'd say a bit reminiscent of Little Feat, Leon Russell, The Eagles, The Outlaws. They just never had that one radio hit to get them up there with the other known acts in the genre. Not because of lack of talent or writing ability...their albums are so well played and produced. I've been a fan for awhile, and my band covers Third Rate Romance, which might be their best known song?

Anyway, when I saw this for a buck at a local shop, I knew I was grabbing it unless it had, like, a cigarette burn or something. It's actually a nice copy, pretty clean.

When I was a kid, the bargain bin were those still new records, received on consignment, that had been sent back to the record company because they hadn’t sold. They were then marked with a notch, drill hole or clipped cover edge and sold back to stores at a discount. My local store always had a great selection of overlooked gems. Notice the Braille along the bottom. Also this was one of the first digitally recorded records ever.

Day 6: Play a budget bin album

So to me budget bin albums in the U.K. were found in Woolworths or newsagents where certain records were cheaper , around £2.99 ,normally on special labels like music for pleasure or Fame , mostly easy listening or dodgy compilations

However there was one album that was released initially on the Starline label and then again on Music for Pleasure later that is absolutely essential to their catalogue and was then upgraded to a full price release in the cd era and is now released as core catalogue at full price ..

But to me this is the finest “budget” album anywhere ..

Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison

I am sorry but I am not a “budget bin” guy. I love digging and will flip through records anywhere but I just simply have not found that for the amount of effort that is put forth digging through these bins is typically rewarding enough for me to pursue especially when you start running low on space. That does not mean I don’t enjoy finding a steal of a deal. My “Budget Bin” is Half Priced Books. It’s a store that makes very little sense when it comes to pricing and that can makes for a worthwhile buying experience. Most often it results in LP’s being overpriced, beat up terrible condition copies of 70’s Classic Rock staples being sold as if they are hard to find Near Mint gems. Those are easy enough to sort through and quietly scoff at but every now and then you will find some great stuff wildly underpriced. For Example This Original Pressing of At Folsom Prison is pristine. The vinyl looks brand new and the tip-on cover is in impeccable shape, no fading or ring wear all the edges are completely clean. It was in such good condition for being a half a century old that I initially assumed it was a repress but after checking the matrix runout I knew this was a find, especially for the marked price (under $20).

Any one else pumped for tomorrow ? I saved my last purchase to open just for this .

I was really excited because I had an album I've wanted for a long time and a 2020 release I love both supposed to show up tomorrow. Now they're somewhere in the USPS ether so I'm not sure what I'm going to do haha

Now they're somewhere in the USPS

I've had some very lengthy ship times these last two months via USPS. Pretty frustrating but I guess I'll just be patient considering the whole world is fukt right now. I had an order that shipped from Acoustic Sounds on April 24th and was due to me on the 29th. Then the 4th. Now it has a 'umm, we're not real sure' designation.

That album is a masterpiece. Future generations will marvel how we didn’t appreciate it more

Day 6: Play a budget bin album

The Gurus were the soundtrack of my teens and I found this copy for a couple of bucks when I was on holiday a couple of years ago. The cover is effed up but the is flat and quiet. Later on I got a repress from the Hoodoo Gurus Club but, I've kept this one.

Gino Vannelli - Brother to Brother

A record I copped from the $5 bin during a 50% off sale, coming down to $2.50 total, my cheapest grab yet for an album that still sounds really good! I don’t tend to dig through the $1 bins at my locals since the records in there aren’t typically in good condition.
