May 2020 Record Challenge Thread (PRIZE RAFFLE AT THE END!)

What's this fancy wood glue thingy?
Wood glue doesn’t stick to vinyl but stick to all the dirt/dust/crud that resides in the vinyl grooves so if you pour some wood glue on a dirty record and let it dry you can peal it away with all the debris trapped in the grooves. For the record I have never attempted this process but people swear by it. Still I would proceed with caution if you have never done this before. Probably a good Idea to test on a dollar bin LP.

Day 6: Play a budget bin album

Picked this up a few years ago at one of my locals for a dollar. Lots of surface noise, so I ran it through the spin clean and then layered on some of that fancy wood glue, and it came out pretty good. Will probably upgrade one day.

I love that album. It's one that I can pretty much always spin if I can't think of anything else to play.

Day 6 - Bargain Bin

Paid 75 cents for this as one of my locals closed up shop after 30 plus years.

Very Nice!!!

I picked up the 12" after the Blues won the cup. (I'm originally from Fairview Heights, my wife is from Champaign/Urbana)

Day 6: Play a budget bin album

Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen - Hot Lick, Cold Steel & Truckers Favorites

This was a fun album to pull from a bargain bin. Most of my collection has been acquired from the parents of my friends or garage/estate sales. I have found some incredible deals and heard some great stories shopping this way. This album was picked for this theme because I remember the joy I felt running into it. An album that I was unaware of, from an artist that I felt I knew quite well. Seeing Tutti Frutti on the tracklist further sparked my excitement. As soon as the needle found the groove and I heard the Commander singing a boogie about the heartbreak caused by taking three bennies only to find out your semi truck won't start, I knew it was an even better deal than I initially thought had been dealt.

Day 6 - Budget Bin

I almost didn’t pick this one. I could’ve gone with any of about 50 albums I have picked up for anywhere between one dollar and five dollars over the years, but how this particular record came in my hands is too good of a story not to share.

All I wanted is a copy of Without A Sound… And in 2006, I won it on eBay. I was starting to get back into this band at this time, mainly due to the then current re-issues that I kept eyeballing and thinking “maybe I should get that next.” Imagine my shock when the Without A Sound album arrived, and also inside the box was this album, an original SST copy of my favorite Dinosaur Jr album, along with a note that read something along the lines of “thank you for your purchase, hope you like this one too.”

Tell me that’s not a bargain!

To this day, I wonder if that guy realizes what he was giving up for free.

Day 6: Budget Bin

I've found some decent scores going back to my thrifting days...but I haven't done that in years. So I'm picking an actual bargain bin record from K-Tel.

DAY 7 - LATEST PURCHASE
Yves Tumor - Heaven to a Tortured Mind
I love this album a lot. I knew to keep this guy on my radar after Safety in the Hands of Love but I was still caught off guard by just how great this was. This direction is almost exactly the one I'd hoped he'd take after hearing that last album and it's just a wonderful listen. Its hard to really pin down what it is about it I like so much but it hasnt left my rotation since it came out. The transition from "Romanticist" into "Dream Palette" is one of my favorite music moments of the year so far.

So you slather some of this stuff on each side, one side at a time, and make sure not get any on the label. I usually stop just at the run out groove. It normally takes a full 24 hours for each side to dry. If all goes well, it will come off in one piece. I’m sure there are videos on YT. It’s supposed to get down in the grooves. I’ve only done this process a few times but I’ve noticed a difference. If I had an even fancier record cleaning machine, this step wouldn’t be necessary.

Interesting! I already have a record in mind to try this.
Thanks!

The Strokes "The New Abnormal"

I love The Strokes and I love this record

I miss my local record shop being open, I don't like ordering online, it's too easy and you don't get the thrill of the hunt! I also like finding things I forgot about while flipping through the stacks! All that being said I'd order this again in a heartbeat!!

I have a few orders in transit and haven't been buying much vinyl as of late but that'll probably change sooner than later!

Day 3 - Jazz Sunday (or in my case Tuesday)

Miles Davis - Miles in Tokyo

Picked this up on a whim last RSD Black Friday. I’m not the most knowledgeable jazz aficionado, but I’m always looking to expand my musical horizons. For a few years my cooking music rotated between Kind Of Blue and telling Google, “play Allman Brothers Live”, but I never went any deeper into jazz territory. So, now I’m picking things up that look interesting and loving almost everything I’m hearing! I have Kind Of Blue on vinyl, too, but I heard if you post pictures of your copy online then the vinyl police S.W.A.T. your door in and take your collection, so I decided to listen to this Live In Tokyo record.

Fun Fact: The price was $29.98, but when I got in my car and looked at my receipt for this, the store had given me a -$12 discount for some reason. Bonus!9F611B02-8F36-491A-8BCF-3696F690BD38.jpeg
