May 2020 Record Challenge Thread (PRIZE RAFFLE AT THE END!)

I've had some very lengthy ship times these last two months via USPS. Pretty frustrating but I guess I'll just be patient considering the whole world is fukt right now. I had an order that shipped from Acoustic Sounds on April 24th and was due to me on the 29th. Then the 4th. Now it has a 'umm, we're not real sure' designation.

The crazy thing is, I sold a ton of records last week (22 of them) and almost all of them were received within 2 days. I shipped them on Wednesday and they arrived at various places across the country on Friday. I don't understand how some can be delivered with record breaking speed and others record breakingly slow haha

Day 5: Cinco de Mayo. Play an album by a Spanish speaking artist
Spinetta "Tester de Violencia" View attachment 45150

Someone more knowledgeable of Argentinian rock will be able to say more about Spinetta and his influence on many rock bands from the era, but for now I'll spin this album from 1988.

Got this for like $50 pesos(around $2.50). Cover is beat up, but the vinyl looks like new

Day 6: Play a budget bin album
The Alan Parson's Project "Eye in the Sky"

Well, now that I’m finally caught up, what’s the best way to start from the beginning? Just start posting albums? There is one I am going to have to make a repeat from someone here, but I’m not looking to win anything, so I’m fine with it. Actually, there was no way around it, because when I read the Senior Year day I took it as “what I was listening to” not “what released” my senior year. So, I had listened to Pinkerton and took a picture, but someone beat me to that.
The only album I have from 1998 was also already posted, though, so it is what it is. Haha.

Don't sweat it.
Join in!
It's a fun way to make some discoveries.

Just do your best. It's fun to participate.

Alright, I’ll start from the beginning.
Day 1 - First Record

Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
Just like every other music loving suburban kid I had my “Springsteen Phase” in my mid-twenties. I was OBSESSED. A girl I was dating bought me a record player for Christmas just so I could play this album.

I bought it before I even thought about owning a record player. I just wanted to display it in my cubicle at work.

If this wasn’t my first record, it could have been my Bargain Bin find because I bought this back when any Springsteen record could be found for $1.99. And let me tell you, I found em and bought em all. For the first year of owning that record player I played the Boss’ entire discography front to back on repeat. Cost me a cool $14, probably, for em all, too.

第六天: bargain bin finds

Gabor Szabo ~ Rambler

IMG_20200506_213108.jpg

Back in college in Lubbock I had finally bought a turntable and needed some new jams. some friends and I decided to climb some trees and headed out to our local shop to do some digging. I had never heard of Gabor before but something about the name Rambler was telling me I needed to buy it. The best $5 I ever spent. I had not idea what the genre was or anything at the time so when I got home and put it on, all of us were shocked at how beautiful it was.

Day 2 - Something Spooky

Roky Erickson - The Evil One

I can’t remember where I first heard “I Walked With A Zombie”, but it was on my Halloween mixes for years. A few years ago I decided to delve deeper into more of his songs and was surprised to find out that I could have just played his catalogue and not fussed with making my own Halloween mixes.

I don’t listen to this as a gimmick, either. “Creature With The Atom Brain” is one of my favorite songs ever.

“I told you I’d come back! Remember Buchanan‽”

What's this fancy wood glue thingy?

So you slather some of this stuff on each side, one side at a time, and make sure not get any on the label. I usually stop just at the run out groove. It normally takes a full 24 hours for each side to dry. If all goes well, it will come off in one piece. I’m sure there are videos on YT. It’s supposed to get down in the grooves. I’ve only done this process a few times but I’ve noticed a difference. If I had an even fancier record cleaning machine, this step wouldn’t be necessary.
