Day 6 - Play a Budget Bin Album

Elvis Presley - A Legendary Performer Vol. 2

My girlfriend comes from an Elvis family. From her grandfather down, they are bred to love Elvis from birth. Her favorite song by him is “If I Can Dream”, so I kinda had my eye out for that song on a record for awhile. Finally found it for $2.99 in one of those ‘EVERYTHING UNDER $5’ bins. Don’t be distracted by that $7.98 tag....or the $5.99 tag on top of it. This puppy has seen some miles.

Brought it home and it turns out to be a pretty solid sounding record. The most interesting thing is that we found a receipt from what seems to be the original sale of this record. It has hand writing on the back of the receipt that says “bill to Elvis record and Elvis magazine, Aug. 27. 1977”.

So, 11 days after Elvis died someone went to the store and bought this record and a magazine. It’s fascinating to try to picture them putting this record on and listening to it a little more than a week after he died. What they must have been feeling....

Day 8: An Album That Makes You Think Of Flowers

OutKast - Speakerboxxx / The Love Below (Arista, 2003 First Pressing)

Whenever I think of Outkast my first thought is their killer track, Roses. Really infectious song and one which I never get bored of hearing. This album is just gigantic, with 4LP's packed into the gatefold. I always wanted to see Outkast live and the closest I got was seeing Big Boi at a festival a few years ago. Even that was super energetic and fun, so I imagine the 2 of them together to be a powerhouse!

Day 8: An Album that makes you think of flowers

The White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan

Opens with a Blue Orchid...

I had wanted to spin “This Charming Man” because of the gladioli on Top of the Pops but it was a non album single so given today specifies an album it was sadly out! Still The White Stripes is never a bad call!

Could have used this for the AOTY day, as well. This was THE album for everyone working at the Trenton A&W the summer it hit!

Wait, my copy of S/T has This Charming Man! Does it not there?

Not originally. When it was reissued for the US markets Sire added it on. In the 90s when they reissued without band input Warner’s put it on the releases but when Johnny Marr remastered them all about a decade ago he took it off because he wanted the album back as they had intended it. There’s a similar situation with How Soon Is Now? on Meat is Murder.

I am so glad we discussed this. I realized that I didn’t have my copy logged in my discogs (@Ginormousthumbs) anddddd I have a 1984 US copy and TCM was included on all American releases (per the Wiki).

Yeah I have one of the 2011 Johnny Marr remasters so it isn’t. It was on my 90s CD, really confused me when it was not on the vinyl when I got it which is why I knew all that lol!
