Day 11: Album you’ve gotten from a record club

Anna Mieke - Idle Mind

I’m with @gaporter, screw the greasy pizza people, they don’t deserve the exposure, wouldn’t it be great to see loads of stuff from different places...

I got this one from the Dublin based vinyl club, LovesVinyl. That month I didn’t like either of their other two albums so I took a flier on this one. So glad I did, such a hauntingly beautiful album, ended up in my top 10 of 2019.

Day 8: An Album that makes you think of flowers

Alexandra Savior "Belladonna of Sadness"

When I found out and first listened to the music of this record, at that time I was visiting a big park with lots and lots of beautiful tulips in the Netherlands, the Keukenhof. 🌷🌷🌷

The music was coproduced by Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys and the style distantly reminds me a bit of Lana del Rey. A great record. 💜

Day 11 - An Album You’ve Gotten From A Record Club

Nathaniel Rateliff - And It’s Still Alright

I joined Magnolia Record Club this year when I saw them offering this album. It is right up there fighting for the “favorite of the year” spot. It’s a great 7:25 am listen, and a beautiful album in general. Equal parts melodic and morose, there’s an over-arching theme of death, loss, and how to carry on afterward running through it. It’s exceptional. 5BAB1450-710A-48BA-BF05-0E438FC15464.jpeg

Day 11 - In Da Club

so Magnolia is a club I didn’t even join. I was a member of Dualtone’s Vinyl Den which folded into Magnolia.

Each month, MRC has a discovery pick which is a $20 add on. With the exception of War and Treaty and Durand Jones, they’ve been things I was unfamiliar with. They are also the best part of the club.

This is one of my most spun records. I absolutely adore it. I’m not even sure how to describe it, which is when Americans makes the most sense to me because it’s not country, it’s not folk, and it’s not your typical singer song writer fare. It’s slickly produced with intricate instrumentation from swelling orchestration to some spectacular guitar work. She has a voice like butter and it’s one of my go to coffee and spins choices.

(It’s the second club record in my top 50 last.fm all time that didn’t come from some club we’ll just not mention. It’s the second from MRC with only Maggie Rogers placing higher. In fact last.fm says there are only 29 records I’ve listened to more)

Day 11 Record club

I didn’t know anything about records clubs, all my records came fro going to thrift shops, flea markets , and 5 for 20 dollar store. My collection started off with cheap barely playable records on my Ion with the built in speakers. I think I saw someone post this on Reddit, I like De La ( I listened to De La Soul is Dead much much more growing up) I didn’t know anything about colored records and thought this one looked dope as hell so I begrudgingly paid the 29 bucks which was way out of my record budget at the time. Passed on the other 2 and still regret missing Handsome boy I didn’t know anything about FOMO. I just thought when a record sold old they made more lol. Then ln I wandered into the forums and tried to figure out why everybody was talking about Oprah Winfrey and Sticky pudding. So I guess without this album I wouldn’t have found all you fine folks that migrated from there.336E1558-D34E-4924-B338-30C7E84C1D01.jpeg

Day 11: Album you’ve gotten from a record club
EPN - Olvidadas (2019, perhaps?)

IMG_20200511_105901_736-01.png

So this is a jazz band from Argentina who made this album of covers. It includes covers of Radiohead, Joni Mitchell, Portishead, PJ Harvey and lots more, and their covers sound NOTHING like the original.
This vinyl was sold only through Club Del Disco, a récord club from Argentina that sells mostly CDs but every now and then they offer something on vinyl. I've discovered lots of new stuff with this record club, and it's one of the best things I've done last year. I'd like they sell more vinyl but oh well.

Oh, if anybody is interested in listening to these guys, they are on Spotify under the name EPN Trío, dont know why.

Day 11: Album You’ve Gotten From A Record Club

Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers - Africaine (Blue Note, 2018 BN Review Vol.2 Pressing)

I expected today to be filled with VMP records, so nice to see such a wide mix so far. I decided to go with this one as I was planning on listening to each record in this box set today anyway. I wasn't sure if it would be classed as a record club, but looking at the description on their website they call it a 'Limited Edition Subscription Service' so I guess that means it counts? The Blue Note Review Vol.1 was released to a luke-warm response mainly due to the fact that there wasn't really much music included and instead all the money went towards a scarf......but when they announced Vol.2 I knew I was much more interested as it includes 2 reissued and incredibly high-quality records from the vaults (Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers - Africaine & Bobby Hutcherson - Patterns) plus a 60+ minute vinyl compilation. There's also a ton of extras including cards, a record brush, 2 amazing prints, 2 magazines and a CD. Its my favourite box set so far as it really feels like an experience rather than a collection of objects. I'm looking forward to Volume 3 when they finally get around to releasing it.
