May 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge - A Crash Course for the Ravers

Day 20 - Modern Love
God and Man / No Religion
Brian Ritchie – Sonic Temple & Court Of Babylon
20220521_101044.jpg

The bassiest atheist's second solo album features a couple of solid digs at Christianity and preachers in the songs, "No Resistin' A Christian" and "Christian For One Day," the latter of which closes with the lines:

"Three hundred sixty-four days, might is right God's will be done.
But there's one day we put things behind us, this day's for family and fun.
Christmas is soon upon us. How I wish that Christ was here.
He could see how nice we can be that one day of the year.

Christian for one day a year."

Day 12 - Ashes to Ashes
Do you remember a guy / that's been In such an early song?
Play a record connected in some way to the record you played yesterday

Day 21 - Station To Station
It's too late to be hateful / The European canon is here
Play something that is European, interpret however you want

Christine and the Queens

E3A81329-51DB-4C9B-8BC9-38E4262182AE.jpeg

I was first introduced to Christine and the Queens when their song Tilted appeared in a fantastic episode of the series Better Things. A bit of info on Chris stolen from Wikipedia:

Héloïse Adélaïde Letissier, known professionally as Christine and the Queens or occasionally simply Chris, is a French singer and songwriter.

In 2016, Christine was ranked number 1 in Vanity Fair's list of most powerful and influential French people who "promote French genius", ahead of the country's president.

Day 17 - John, I’m Only Dancing (again)
Play something that makes you want to dance

I don't dance, but if I did I'd dance to this...or at least most of the tracks.

Day 21 - Station To Station
Play something that is European, interpret however you want

Steve Grossman [1994] - Time To Smile
Grossman is a masterful tenor player who was wisely invited as the first musician to play for the French record label "Dreyfus Jazz". This is a flippin' great straight-ahead jazz album that will probably never get another release, or remaster, because Steve Grossman simply does not have enough name recognition.

Day 19 - Look Back In Anger
"You know who I am," he said / The speaker was an angel
Play something angry

Angry music from someone that makes people angry.

And I agree that he's a piece of shit and have no reason not to believe Evan Rachel Wood, but I still like the music. (I haven't watched Phoenix Rising, yet, but I will as the director of that doc made West Of Memphis - which I love.) Roman Polanski is a pedo and a rapist, but Rosemary's Baby is an amazing movie that I watch somewhat regularly. I try to separate the art from the artist, if I can...sometimes it takes a while, sometimes it never happens.

Day 20 - Modern Love
God and Man / No Religion
Play something (anti-)religious or spiritual

"Judith" is about Maynard's mother Judith Marie Keenan, who suffered a stroke and was restricted to a wheelchair for the rest of her life, yet still believed in Christianity.

Day 22 - Blackout
Play something related to Japan

Sonny Rollins In Japan [1973] - Sonny Rollins
Not a very widely distributed Sonny Rollins album, because it was only ever released in Japan, which is a shame because it's one of the best live Sonny albums out there. Also, the recording quality on this CD may be one of the best I've heard.

Australian Daevid Allen was a founding member of UK's Soft Machine, but was refused re-entry back to the UK after a European tour because he previously overstayed his visa. He settled in Paris and started Gong.
