Movies

The wife and I watched Turning Red. She loved it, as she was a dorky teenage girl who drew anime characters and made cringey videos with her friends. I thought it was cute. Cool to see some Canadian representation in film.

It doesn’t really lose its steam. Andy Serkis is a bit underserved and the movie has seven endings. But it nails the tone and really calls bullshit on the Wayne mythos.
This is how we felt. We went to an early showing on Saturday and when we left we didn't realise how long it had been and were shocked that it was as long as it was. Taking this as a good sign because we didn't feel like it had been a long experience.

I just discovered that the Criterion release of Miller's Crossing has some Coen-made nips and tucks and has removed one of my favorite moments in the film.

WHY
You know, I'm not against the idea of directors going back and re-editing their older work in general, but for something like Criterion, would it really hurt to include the original version of the film as well? Ugh. Well I already bought the thing during their last sale so hopefully the changes just don't bother me that much.

I mean, I think Miller's Crossing is kind of a perfect film, so this edit in particular is baffling to me. It's a great moment!

It also seems like they're using the same master of the film as the original Fox Blu-ray I've got, just at a higher bitrate, so I guess I'm going to revert to my earlier copy. Real bummer, that.

Yeah... significantly less excited to get my copy in the mail now. I mean, I guess if the Coens felt like it had to be done, I wouldn't want to be Criterion trying to tell them what to do, but the fact they never mentioned this was a different cut is pretty dirty of them. Especially when it wouldn't be a problem at all if they just included the original version as well, but I have to imagine the Coens nixed that too? So much for this being the "definitive version" I suppose.

Not for nothing, but this sort of gives me flashbacks to learning that the VMP pressing of Demon Days took out the transitions between tracks halfway through spinning it for the first time. You can't market your product towards the super-fans of a medium and expect them not to notice even the smallest differences.
