I’ve seen, uh, very little Mann. The Insider ruled though.

Should probably catch up on them at some point.

I mentioned that I've been listening to the old Blank Check archives, or at least to the miniseries that interest me (skipped Nancy Meyers and the Ghibli series, among others). Tim Burton was kind of a slog toward the end, although it validated a lot of the feelings I've had about his movies since ca. 1999. It's strange to think that I've thought of him as a dud for nearly a quarter of century now.

Anyhow, I'm in the middle of the Michael Mann eps, and every one of them makes me want to sit down and watch that movie NOW. I've never seen Thief, Ali, or Blackhat, so I'll definitely tackle those, but I've also only seen Manhunter, Mohicans, Heat, The Insider, Collateral, Miami Vice, and Public Enemies once apiece. And those last two I may need to reevaluate now that I have a better idea of what I'm actually getting into with them.

How do you all rank your Mann?

How do you all rank your Mann?

Yeah, Heat, Last Of The Mohicans, Miami Vice, The Insider, Manhunter, are all fantastic. I really don’t think I have seen a bad Mann movie to be honest. I think his films range in quality from very good to great.

Talk to me about Blackhat. Obviously it was a flop and I remember it sounding/looking ridiculous myself when the trailer originally came out, but like other Mann films I’ve since heard people say it’s actually pretty good, especially the director’s cut, which (again, I haven’t seen this one yet) moved a pivotal event from the end of the movie to the beginning apparently?

So is it like Heat where people come back and say “Actually this is great,” or is it like Miami Vice where people will come back and say “Actually this wasn’t as bad as I thought?”

I liked Blackhat from the first time I saw it. I agree that the trailer made me skeptical, but I've rewatched it several times and am always pleasantly reminded why I like it each time.

I don't think I've seen the director's cut. I have this on Blu-ray and if I remember right then the director's cut has never been released on physical media. I can check my copy to see for sure when I get home.

I think it falls in the latter camp. I didn’t make it through the first time I saw it, but recently was doing a Mann marathon and watched it and actually found I liked it more than I thought. I think I just bought into it more and went along for the ride the second time around. That being said, it’s still not a movie I’m super into. I just really couldn’t make it through Public Enemies lol.

I will say, Heat got me hooked on first watch. I absolutely love Thief, and want to be interesting and say it’s my favorite Mann movie, but Heat to me is damn near perfect.

Walton Goggins Joker is something I'd actually love to see. I think the internet is trying to make Willem Dafoe happen, but that just sounds like typecasting to the Jokers we've seen before. A loquacious Joker in Boyd Crowder mode? Now that's based.

Watched The Black Godfather today. A documentary about Clarence Avant. Worthy of your time. Didn’t know who he was going in but his influence is grandiose.

Personally I thought Nightmare Alley was great, but I also understand why it's gotten the response it has.

Loved it as well! I never saw the 1947 film noir classic, so I can't compare the two although I understand the remake is pretty true to the original.
