Movies

The first FB sucked so hard that it almost burned away all good will I had for the franchise by itself, but then Jo, the queen of suck, took care of the rest. HP was formative for me and a lot of people, and I have some nostalgia for it, but I'm begging for everybody to move on, the amount of people in their 30s who still make it a personality trait is too damn high.

I actually liked the first FB but don't remember hardly anything about the second one.

Not sure how many Horror fans there are in this thread but I finally got to see Ti West's X tonight and it somehow not only met the extremely high expectations I had but shattered them sky mutha fucking high! The movie ended up being more deep and meaningful then I expected without ever feeling the least bit pretentious. It still had a very gritty Texas Chainsaw Massacre universe esque feel (It's set in 1979 at a Farm for the most part and was SIGNIFICENTLY better then the uh... actual remake this year) that will please just about any slasher fan while having some well placed humor as well. The cinematography is top notch, acting is good to great all around and the score/soundtrack adds the perfect amount of extra depth to make this one of the best all around Horror films I have seen the last few years easily. I'm looking forward to giving it another watch or two and find things I missed because it's clearly got some hidden depth that might be lost on first view! Mia Goth (The Pearl and Maxine dynamic was SO well done!) and Brittany Snow absolutely stole the show for me in this one but everyone shined at some point.

Something many might not notice is that every death in the film is foreshadowed at some point in a way that is not the least bit obvious until after you see the actual death happen. I thought it might have been a coincidence at first but it happens with every character. I'll stop my thoughts here as I don't want to truly spoil anything!

I’m curious to check this one out as it sounds like something I would enjoy. It’s now up to rent digitally, so I’m gonna give it a watch this weekend.

Let me know what you think of it once you watch it! It seems like many people loved the movie while a good amount also hated it which I will say it is a bit of a slow burner to start out and can get dark and disturbing at times but after watching any of the trailer and reading the synopsis that shouldn't be much of a shock at all. It's def. an R rated Horror film which some people weren't expecting I guess?

All I know about this one is that Kid Cudi is in it and it's A24. For some reason that has my attention. I'll for sure rent it when it's not $20.

Inland Empire at the IFC in NYC is essential viewing.
I am super interested in his new restoration work on it as it’s easily one of his worst looking films.
It's pretty nonessential in every other location...
I know people hate it, but I like how off the rails weird and scary it is. However, it’s probably his most inaccessible movie

I mean, a reviewer once said the SD CAM look makes the film seem like a direct feed from Lynch’s brain and so I’ve learned to accept the film despite that obvious quirk.

It’s the first time I’ve seen the film on a big screen but definitely more fun than watching it on dvd

I saw this in the theater last month and I agree 100%! I went in fairly blind and it exceeded my expectations on every level. It's movies like this that make me wish horror was a more respected genre because Mia Goth deserves all the accolades for her performance... I legitimately had no idea that she was also playing Pearl until the end credits! That was a total mind blown moment haha

I definitely hope to see it again at some point!

Yeah, same here! Pearl looked vaguely familiar at times but I never expected that haha.. The makeup job was really well done and like you said I tried hard not to let anything be spoiled before I seen it and only kind of skipped through the trailer once months ago which all def. elevated the experience. Pretty cool to find out the whole Pearl prequel is already shot and a sequel is in the works to make it a trilogy. Honestly, it was just refreshing to watch a really good horror movie that was it's own and not some re-boot of a classic which X is better then all of the recent rehashes imo.

Sadly, unless it has some random A lister in the movie a Horror movie could be an absolute masterpiece with incredible performances and still get no recognition. A24 is def. doing all they can though.

Nightmare Alley was very beautiful and well acted and only about a third of the movie plus the last scene really worked for me.

That's pretty much how I felt as well.. This was another one I was looking forward to since it had one of my favorite all time Director's heading it, a great cast and a setting i've always been intrigued with but it just kind of fell flat and was a pretty big letdown overall especially with the surrounding hype I had going in.. I think the older HBO series "Carnivale" does the whole deep take on early era Carnivale/Freak Show significantly better then this movie in pretty much every way and once I finished this movie it just made me reminisce about that show and want to re-watch it honestly. It still had it's moments and is worth watching especially if you have much more tame expectations going in. It's def. not at the level of Del Toro's best work at all but to be fair not many movies are. The cast and acting across the board is fantastic along with it being beautifully shot though which made it probably better then it should have been!

I was really into whole first third at the carnival, but the pacing got really wonky in the last hour and a half. That last scene with
Tim Blake Nelson
rips though. The ending was telegraphed a mile away, but I thought the execution was great.

Also, this may be a strange complaint, but the profanity in the movie felt very out of place, borderline anachronistic.

Broke: Gary Oldman deserved the 2011 Oscar for his performance as George Smiley in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Woke: Gary Oldman deserved the 2011 Oscar for his performance as Lord Shen in Kung Fu Panda 2

Same, I was locked in for the first 1/3 or so of the movie and loved just about every aspect of it but after that like you said it just got really wonky and didn't have that same fluidity and felt very disjointed for the rest of it. It's a shame because there's def. a legitimate classic in there somewhere I think.

So many movies have this problem for me though where the final act just kind of loses me and ends with disappointment after such a strong start. This one obviously still has so much great things going for it and still worth seeing regardless but it's def. disappointing I can't list it with the other Del Toro classics.

Yeah, this scene was no surprise at all but Cooper's expressions and eyes alone told the story of that scene beautifully.. He def. acted his ass off in this role in case anyone still doubted him.. I was watching it with a few people and someone said he looked just like Will Forte from his role on The Last Man On Earth which I can't unsee now but luckily they said after the credits rolled 🤣

Have been a Gilbert Gottfried fan forever, but it sadly took his passing for me to get to the documentary "Gilbert". Wonderfully done. Funny and moving. You can stream it for free on something called Pluto TV if you don't mind commercials.
