Movies

I have seen Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom countless times for over my lifetime; it was one of the first VHS cassettes my family ever owned, and today I learned Dan Akroyd had a small speaking role in the film. Funny thing is when I read that he was in the film I almost immediately knew exactly the part he played. I think my issue was that it’s a rushed scene so you hear him and his odd old-timey accent but really only get a few quick cuts and none are close up of his face.

You reminded me of a conversation I had over the weekend with my fiancee and her parents. I was part of the VHS generation and had a massive stack of them growing up that I would use to record films late at night or if we were out (I still remember all the times of being shocked awake by the VHS being automatic rewound as it got to the end).

The reason this came up in conversation is that we watched Mrs Doubtfire whilst playing cards over the weekend. It's a film I have seen plenty of times over the years and know it really well BUT I realised that whole scenes were completely new to me because on my tv-recorded VHS they would cut scenes to shorten it and add adverts. It's the same with the original Home Alone, it always surprises me when an advert doesn't kick in at certain parts.

One of the few things I am extremely proud of is that I was able to record the BBC 1995 Pride and Prejudice mini series off of the TV and I was at the VCR the whole time so that I could stop it and I was able to edit out the commercials. I wore that tape out when I was in college.

BBC 4 rocking the late night b & w movies tonight ..original King Kong followed by the Thing from another world ...might be a late one for me ..got them both in dvd but these movies are best late at night on the box live ...
