Movies

We have tickets for the whole family we bought a few days ago, but we may be rethinking taking the kids at first. My daughter (13 years old) in particular has a love/hate relationship with horror-adjacent stuff and may want to wait to watch it at home.
It's definitely a pretty hard PG-13. I can imagine it might be a bit scary for smaller kids. Of course, everyone's standards are different (I love horror, so nothing in it bothered me at all), but it is fairly intense for a mainstream superhero movie.

Tomorrow is my birthday and I haven't been to a movie in a theater in years now, so I'm making my wife take me to Dim Sum and then a double header of Everything Everywhere All At Once followed by Dr. Strange as my birthday present. I'm really excited to see these two on the big screen.

It was years between theater visits for me....Covid reasons, but it was even long before that. I used to go all the time, but then it was easier not to. Movies just didn't seem to be worth the $$ to go see them.

The first one I saw "post-covid" was 5cream - and it was great being back in a theater. I go to mid-afternoon matinees on a week day, as I hate people, so it wasn't busy at all.

That's the best time to go. I too dislike people. It's why I don't love going to concerts that often anymore.

Hubs and I are going through the Marvel movies starting with Phase 1. We are half-way through and I'm not sure if I can hang with these movies. There's a ton of fighting and explosions that happen all the time, sometimes spontaneously. It gets overwhelming. Iron Man wasn't too bad, but Iron Man 2 really lost me.

My wife and I watched all of the Marvel movies during the pandemic because we hadn't seen many of them. I will say that Iron Man 2 is not a good film. Overall though I'm a fan of the MCU as a whole.

Iron Man 2 and 3 were stinkers in my opinion. Hang in there and Phase 2 and 3 get way better. Some of the Capt. America stuff is blah as well but it links a lot of the stories together. In the end, each of the movies had something to give to make the Endgame stuff make sense. Some more than others.

Godspeed. I surprisingly enjoyed the Capt. America stuff, but the real fun begins with Guardians and cosmic Marvel mid-Phase 2.

The hubs is serious about tackling the Marvel universe so I'm going along whether I like it or not. I have seen Guardians and I like that one. I'm glad to hear that Iron Man 2 is not a particularly good one and they do get better. I'll hang on, but expect some bitching after I watch Iron Man 3.

Feel free to share your thoughts in our local superhero thread as well 👀

I...like Iron Man 2. 🤷🏻‍♂️
I see; share a wild, indefensible opinion in an effort to make my opinion sound wild and indefensible. 😜

Iron Man 2’s interesting because the MCU machine wasn’t quite locked in and the turnaround after Iron Man 1 was so quick. There are a bunch of improvisations and digressions, and odd touches which they just had no time to question or dull down. There are a lot of interesting zigs and zags before the House Style gets locked in.

To me, Guardians is when the MCU got good. Before that, Phase 1 and pre-Guardians Phase 2 was mostly "serious" with a pinch of Downey sarcasm, but Guardians and then Ant Man signaled the more jokey, self-aware version of the MCU, which makes all the explosions and fighting tolerable.

I enjoy most, if not all of the Marvel films as kinda escapist fun. For me only Black Panther is a stand alone “good film” outside of the whole universe hullabaloo…

Dr Strange on the other hand is a steaming sack of shit. So bad.
